Rolf's Story

Life My wife, two sons and I live in Centennial, Colorado - a few miles south of Denver. My wife and I met through the Colorado Mountain Club; we share passions for hiking and telemark skiing. After high school in Humble, Texas and college in Houston, I headed east for law school in New York City, then back to Houston to work four years at a big firm. Then I quit and spent 1-1/2 years backpacking around the western U.S. and taking an Outward Bound semester course. I ended up in Denver, working for an environmental organization for one year before signing on as a staff lawyer with the Regional Transportation District - the Denver area's mass transit provider. Many years later, I'm still with RTD and loving it. I do a little bit of everything at RTD: personal injury defense, workers' compensation hearings, labor arbitrations and negotiations, contract negotiations, employment disputes, first amendment issues, and a bunch of other stuff. My family and I love getting into the backcountry and hiking in Colorado's incredible mountains. We are also very fond of old-time dancing (waltz, contra, swing, tango) and bluegrass music. My parents live close by. My little brother Erik is a famous spa...Expand for more
ce scientist who's been written up in Time magazine and who's published articles in Scientific American and elsewhere. He lives in Santa Cruz with his two sons. My parents live about a third of a mile from us in our neighborhood, so we get to see them all the time. We welcome visitors! I'd be happy to "tour guide" or give travel suggestions to any classmates coming out to Colorado. and I'd enjoy hearing from classmates. School I still remember the words to my high school song: "In dear old Humble High School, beneath the Texas sun / Where when our work is finished, our time is spent in fun / We love to work, we love to play / Spending many a long happy day-ay-ay-ay / The faculty that aids us to reach our higher aim / Will share with us the glory of Humble's future fame / We hate to see, the time is nigh / When we part from dear old Humble High! And if THAT doesn't say how I feel about my good old alma mater, I'm not sure what else could! Workplace I work in the legal department for the Regional Transportation District in Denver. Previous jobs were as a lawyer with the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund (now Earthjustice Legal Defense Fund) in Denver, and the law firm Baker Botts in Houston.

So much fun jamming outdoors on a beautiful fall day. No stress, lots of mistakes, lots of fun.
The Ring of Brodgar, in Orkney: a 5000-year-old circle of mysterious, massive stones that were hewn many miles away.
Eilean Donan Castle. We lost count of how many castles we saw in Scotland.
Sea stacks hundreds of feet high at remote Duncansby Head on the North Sea.
The “Highland Coo” - this one on the Isle of Skye.
The iconic Swilcan Bridge on St. Andrews’ Old Course, where they’ve played golf for 600 years. We were fortunate to visit this late in the day while a tournament was going on; otherwise there’d have been many more people.
The ruins of St. Andrews Castle on a North Sea sunset.
The remote highlands east of Glencoe.
In Edinburgh we visited several pubs with folk music. The Captain’s Bar was our favorite.
This is an invitation letter I dictated at the request of this old gentleman who owns the “Giant Angus MacAskill Museum” on the Isle of Skye. He asked to dictate to me because his hands are too weak to write. I even forged
Castle Mey at the northernmost tip of Scotland. Queen Elizabeth II’s mother - the Queen Mother - bought this 1500s castle and saved it from ruin. When the Queen Mother died she left everything the way she kept it, with cute
The town of Portree: one of several in Scotland where landowners have painted their dockside buildings in bright colors.
A Scottish traffic jam on the Isle of Mull. We nearly missed our ferry because this Highland bull was not interested in moving. So many roads in Scotland are single-lane, with turnouts every 100 or so yards for opposing tra
Iona Abbey, dating back to Viking times.
Dunvegan Castle on the Isle of Skye.
Eliean Donan Castle from another viewpoint.
Finally, Castle Stalker - featured in “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” - on Loch Laich between Oban and Glencoe.
Listen to enough “outdoor disaster” type podcasts and there’s an unmistakable common thread: the failure to tell others where you’re going and when to expect an update from you, and the inability to call for help and show s
