Roman's Story
Roman is from South Gate and Norwalk, California. Roman's schools include Santa Fe High School. Roman later attended Cerritos community college and transferred to the University of California, Irvine. Here, he earned his bachelor's degree in biological sciences and a minor in medical anthropology.
Roman proudly represented his family as the first to graduate from college on June 13, 2021.
During his time at UCI, Roman had the opportunity to conduct biomedical research for the Chaput Lab. His investigations were supported by the UCI Minority Sciences Program (MSP). As a Chaput lab member, Roman also had the opportunity to mentor and train visiting high school and undergraduate students as well as newly appointed undergraduate lab team members.
Roman presented his team's research findings for various local and national conferences. His team's investigations were published in Nature Communications on May 11, 2021.
Roman is also a social justice advocate. He has humbly served as a UCI Students Advocating for Immigrant Rights and Equity (S.A.F.I.R.E.) Fundraising/Campaign Coordinator. He has also advocated alongside Working Group 2-Representation: Recruitment and Outreach...Expand for more
to Black Students as a facilitator for UCI's End Racism Initiative.
Anti-Black Racism, police brutality, murder, violence, and stubborn injustices exacerbated by and during the COVID-19 pandemic filled Roman with anger and heartache in addition to dealing with the tragic loss of his father, Roman Ariel Meza Sr.
Roman banded together with two other UCI students to write a proposal for a program that would aim to support minority and disadvantaged first-year and incoming transfer students in the School of Biological Sciences at UCI. The team's Leadership, Empowerment and Development (L.E.D.) program was awarded with a UCI BioSci Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Leadership Excellence Award. L.E.D. also received external donations to further support program development.
The UCI L.E.D. program is destined to induct its inaugural first class for the upcoming 2022-2023 academic year.
Roman's interests include spending time with his family, cooking, podcasts, learning from his mentors, hiking, animals, attending concerts, and playing the drums.
One of Roman's favorite quotes comes from his father: "Son, we can do all things".
Rest in peace Dad.
