Ron's Story

I was born and raised in the South, growing up in Georgia and Florida with six sisters and attending college in North Carolina. I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in Political Science, and promptly threw away four years of expensive higher education to take a job as the manager of a clothing store. Applying my hard-earned political skills, I fairly quickly found myself promoted to the position of ¿buyer,¿ a job no one in my family was ever able to understand no matter how many times I tried to explain it. I re-located to the company¿s headquarters in New York City, where for ten years I assured myself that it was only temporary. I eventually moved to southern California, where I now work ¿ yes, as a buyer ¿ for a large footwear retailer. And I complain about all the new people moving to southern California, making traffic worse. While far from exciting on a day-to-day basis, my career has allowed me to travel to places I would probably never have gone otherwise. I was in Hong Kong to see a half-million residents march through the streets in solemn protest of the events unfolding in Tiananmen Square. I took breakfast on my h...Expand for more
otel balcony in Como, Italy, to watch as school-children arrived for their morning classes, pouring into the hotel plaza from the hydrofoils that had picked them up from their villages around the edges of the great lake. I was chased from Taiwan by a raging typhoon, only to have to endlessly circle the airport in Tokyo while the runway was checked for damage caused by an earthquake that had struck as the plane approached. I currently live near Los Angeles, CA, with my wife and two children, who are the primary inspiration for almost everything I do. My daughter, age 10, is pretty sure she would be a princess if she could only find the castle, and insists every night that I tell her what to dream about as long as it¿s not scary, freaky, weird, sad, ugly, gross or something she doesn¿t want to dream about; and my son, age 13, enjoys playing video games when he isn¿t talking about playing video games. Like me, he learned to read from comic books and adventure stories, and like me he enjoys writing and illustrating stories of his own for friends in school. He reminds me of myself in ways I don¿t always want to admit, but in other ways makes me realize how great it is to be a Dad.
