Ron's Story
Life
After Clark H.S. I managed to go to school for 2 years and not earn a SINGLE CREDIT over 4 semesters. I would always withdraw from classes so that like D-Day in "Animal House", I managed to have no GPA. At the time, cars, women and beer seemed like more of a priority. Nice way to apply myself huh? When I was driving to the campus to withdraw from my 4th semester, I finally realized I needed to do something worthwhile with my life and joined Air Force at 20 as a KC-135 Crew Chief.
I screwed up & got married at 23 when I was in England. Finally realized that a foreign accent isn't everything, got smart and divorced her at 28. Married to Laure (who I met in France) at 29. We're still crazy about each other and though I'm quite a bit grayer, I don't think she's changed a bit from when I met her. Still married at 40......guess I found a good one :). We had our daughter Amaya when I was 34. She's a smart, insightful, funny, all around great kid.....but then who doesn't say that about their kids? :) She can be be a princess one day, and the next want to help me work on cars.
After 20 years in the A.F., I decided it was time for me to retire. During that time I was at R.A.F. Fairford in England (88-90), Castle AFB California (90-95) and McConnell AFB, Kansas (95-07) and spent more time away from home TDY than you might believe. I can proudly say that I spent all but 3 months of my ca...Expand for more
reer on the flightline, and with the exception of Somalia, Panama, and the "first" Iraq war, I've been deployed in direct support of every major operation the U.S. has been involved in the last 20 years. .....but unfortunately when it stops being fun and you spend just as much time (or more) "away" than with your family, it's time to go. No regrets though, had a blast and I've been to places and seen things that most people will never have a chance to do.
I retired in Oct '07 decided to stay in Wichita, Kansas and started my "second career" (AND growing my hair long) at Hawker/Beechcraft (formerly Raytheon) as a supervisor on the King Air final assembly line. Big change going from supervising maintenance on a big 4 engine military jet to production of a small twin engine civil turboprop, but I'm having a good time.
When I'm not working I'm either spending time with Laure & Amaya, or at the gun range (sometimes with Laure!) or restoring the 66 Corvette (sometimes with Amaya!) my Dad bought in 1967. Those that know me, know I'm hooked on cars, so here's an update: I realized I'd never restore it, so after owning it for 23 years, I sold the 78 Z28.....how I didn't destroy it and myself in my earlier years is beyond me. The "cool" cars I've had are a 92 Z28, 95 Z28, 85 Corvette, 01 Camaro SS, 96 Z28 and I currently have an 04 Z06 Corvette as my "daily driver" and the '66 I'm restoring.
