Ron's Story
Life
Midway through my senior year I joined the Marine Corps. I served four years and got to see the world, just like the commercials promised. The highlights of those four years were the Iranian Hostage Crisis, crossing Col. Muammar QadhafiÂs line of death in the Gulf of Sidra, the Beirut barracks bombing, and the invasion of Grenada. It was all exciting, but I decided I wanted a more traditional education, so I got out.
I returned to Florida where I received an AA from St Petersburg Junior college. Once I completed that, I tried a few traditional jobs, but found that them to be lacking stimulation. Wanting to stay on the Âright side of the law, I applied for and received an Army ROTC scholarship. I completed a BachelorÂs degree in Political Science from the University of Tampa.
The army decided I would make a good helicopter pilot so I went to flight school. While I was in flight school, I met my wife, Hilary. We graduated just before the first gulf war. The Army sent me over seas and sent her to Colorado. I was an observation helicopter pilot; unarmed and unafraidÂ
at least that is what I tell any one who will listen.
After eight years of flying, I decided I wanted to try something else. I considered leaving the service, but decided to transfer to Special Operations instead. This gave me the opportunity to get a Masters Degree in International Relations from Troy State University and learn to speak, read, and write Vietnamese. While I was in graduate school, I had my first child, Nich...Expand for more
olas.
I was hand selected to lead a team to Vietnam to conduct the first training mission with the Vietnamese since the end of the war. I spent the better part of 2001 in Hanoi working with Vietnamese soldiers and government officials to help rid their country of unexploded ordinance. Most of this ordinance was or Chinese, Vietnamese or Cambodian origin. My last trip to Vietnam was interrupted by the Terrorist attacks on 9/11 and subsequently the second Gulf war.
When I got back, the Army immediately reassigned me to South Korea. I worked as a liaison between our army, the South Korean army, and the local civilians. I also helped develop some of the strategies for our future disengagement from the peninsula.
When that assignment ended in 2002, the Army sent me Fort Bragg North Carolina where I worked in the John F Kennedy Special Warfare Center developing plans. I also did some work with equipment and tactics testing. The most notable piece of equipment I helped test and develop was the Stryker armored combat vehicle.
I decided it was time to move on and in August of 2004, I retired from the army. Ironically, the very day I retired, my wife was recalled from the inactive reserves to active duty. She is currently flying Blackhawk helicopters in the Mosul area of northern Iraq. In November of 2005 Hilary came home and now we are all a happy family once again.
In November of 2007 I bought a coffee shop in Hot Springs Arkansas. If you are ever in town stop by 406 Central Ave for a great cup joe.
