Ron's Story

It all started Thursday, November 14, 1940 on 3rd, across the street from the post office in Moscow, Idaho. All went well for the next eight years. Then in 1949 we (my mom and brother Lonnie) moved to Los Angeles. 1951 we moved to San Bernardino. Education I attended school at Monterey Street Elementary moved on to Highland Jr. High then to Pacific High School. At Highland Jr. High I took an aptitude test to determine my future career path. Forestry ranked the highest, drafting second with law enforcement coming in third. After graduation I attended the University of Idaho, College of Forestry majoring in Wildlife Management. I lived with my grandparents because I could not afford to live on campus. My grandmother passed away between my freshman and sophomore year so I returned to San Bernardino enrolled at San Bernardino Valley College and took every class related to drafting I could. As the years rolled by I earned a BA from Pepperdine ('75) and a MPA from USC ('78). Employment My first job in California (1950) was with the Los Angeles Herald Examiner. I sold the paper at the corner of Sunset and Echo Park in LA. When we moved to San Bernardino I again got into the newspaper business. Only in SB you didn't stand on the corner somewhere you stuffed a load of papers in a bag and delivered each of them to some one's home. My route was from 9th and Tippecanoe to Highland and Waterman. Made three cents a paper. Lost my job when I got hit by a car on Waterman south of Highland, near where that huge eucalyptus tree stood or stands. I then worked for Mr. Binney of Stockwell and Binney fame. I mowed his grass and trimmed his hedges. Got the job when Bill Beebe (Class '60) retired. Then it was back to the newspaper business. Acme Color Print was owned by the San Bernardino Sun Telegram. They printed the Sunday comics for the newspapers of the western United States. I was a flyboy, which means I stood at the at the end of a very large printing press, scooped the comics up, shuffled them into neat bundles, hour after hour after hour. I worked with a fellow Pacific grad but for the life of me cannot remember his name. If that was you let me know. With my boatload of drafting classes from SBVC I got a job with Johnson & Hastings, real estate appraisers. I drew the maps for their reports. After two years I had enough experience to apply for a job with the San Bernardino County Planning Department. I was hired as a Planning Delineator and again I drew maps and illustrated their publications. After a few months with the Planning Departm...Expand for more
ent I began to think I should look into the third aptitude option - Law Enforcement. I joined the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Reserve Unit. There was a problem well two problems if you measure them in inches. In 1964 you had to be 5'-9" to be a deputy sheriff. I'm 5"-7". So over the next two years I failed the physical twice. Then with the help of Paul Young (Class of '60), an empty ½ gallon milk carton, a box of plaster of paris, a little water, and a miracle compound provided by Paul we made two 2" heels. I stuck'm in my socks and was measured for the third time. I passed. I was 5-9. I have to confess it may not have all been in the socks. I went to a chiropractor three times a week for three months to get stretched. Before I went to the chiropractor I consulted Joe Page my football coach at Pacific about and hazards involve in the procedure. All Mr. Page gave me was a thirty-minute lecture on the benefits of being 5-7. What did he know he was 6'-7". July 16, 1966 I was hired as a deputy sheriff for San Bernardino County assigned to the Glen Helen Rehabilitation Center. January, 1967 I was transferred to the Victorville Station for patrol duties. March, 1969 promoted to detective, Homicide Detail, San Bernardino County Courthouse. 1971 Promoted to Sergeant, Central Patrol (San Bernardino, Highland, Muscoy and Devore), Fontana Station, San Bernardino Mountain Search & Rescue. 1979 Promoted to Lieutenant, Central Patrol, Twin Peaks Station (Crestline, Twin Peaks, Blue Jay, Lake Arrowhead, Green Valley Lake, Running Springs), Detective Division (Crimes Against Children, Bomb Arson, Specialized Investigations) 1989 Promoted to Captain, City of Highland 1996 retired At my retirement gathering the City of Highland gave me an Ameripass. That's a bus ticket to ride a Greyhound bus anywhere you want for thirty days. February 1996 I got on the bus in San Bernardino then it was on to San Diego, Phoenix, El Paso, Brownsville, TX, Laredo, San Antonio, Key West, FL, Atlanta, Bangor, ME, Cleveland, Kansas City, Denver, Missoula, MT, Vancouver, BC, Seattle, Portland, Sacramento, Los Angeles and back to San Bernardino. It took thirty-three days and 13,500+ miles. Family 1963 Married Bonnie Becker, St. Bernadine's Class of '60. We had three kids, Ronnie Jr., Beaverton, OR, Kathleen, Vancouver, WA and David, Kansas City MO. 1975 Bonnie and I separated and divorced. 1977 Married Mary Lynch. She had son Jason, London, Great Briton. Mary and I have been exploring America in our RV since April, 1996. Our 15th year in the motor home.
