Ron Wallace:

CLASS OF 1974

Ron's Story

Life Diana, my wife of 28 years, and I live on the far east side of Norman, OK with two of our four sons, Donovan and Cameron. We currently lease a house nestled on a 30 acre parcel of mixed pasture and forest (the Crosstimbers) not far from Lake Thunderbird. We have a simple, pleasant life enjoying family and nature (lots of wildlife in the yard, including deer, racoons, and a large variety of birds, not to mention over thirty horses), and spending time enjoying the vast array of entertainment opportunities in Norman. Diana is the stalwart of the family, having homeschooled four sons, which includes Cameron who recently turned 16. I work for a non-profit, the United Urban Indian Council, Inc., as the instructor of General Educational Development programs and oversee a summer classroom train ing programs for 14-16 year olds. Of course, as the name implies we serve Native Americans/American Indians in Oklahoma County through grants from the Workforce Investment Act of the US Department of Labor in conjucntion with the Department of the Interior's Native American Programs. Our son, Jason, is the pastor of a church in Mt. Pleasant, TX. He and his wife Stacey have three children, Ethan, Blake, and Hadleigh. Our other son, Jonathan (Jon), works for the O.U. athletic department. He has two sons, Jacob (Jake) and Noah. They live in Blanchard, Oklahoma with their mom, Leesa, and sister, Jessica, who is like my "adopted" granddaughter. I enjoy art and music, having worked at one time as a professional potter. I hope to soon return to doing pottery as a part-time vocati...Expand for more
on, or at the least as an active hobby. College Yes, there were lots of all-nighters, but they were not caffeine-fueled. It was, afterall, quite an amazing time when we were in college. Of course, I wasn't the same person I was in high school either. I had already hitchhiked around the country and lived in a commune before I even considered going to college. You know I don't even remember a counselor speaking to me once about going to college even though my grades were good -- middle B average. I'm sure it was a good thing, or just karma, otherwise I wouldn't have had all the amazing experiences that have shaped my life. So I came back from "bumming" (I did work when necessary) around the country to attend Oscar Rose. I became involved in campus politics as a diversion and ended up eventually being student body president. After graduating with an AA in Sociology, I accepted a scholarship to USAO in Chickasha, OK (they offered me a job for the summer with good pay and free room and board). I graduated from USAO with a BS in Psychology and a minor in Art, Ceramics. I took classes in art from time to time for the fun of it. Then in 1997, I went back to USAO to get a History degree and a teaching certificate in secondary Social Studies. I taught social studies in Chickasha before moving to Norman in 2002. College was just too much fun; I'd do it again if I had the money. I'd get a PhD in something that interests me; all the while participating in campus activities. You know, writing papers can be incredibly fun if you enjoy the subject matter and the sources.
