Ron's Story

9 Apr 2014 Dear Classmates, Wow, over 40 years post graduation and I'm still surviving! Writing a story seems a bit like an English assignment where we get to write our own obituary while we are still alive. Uff! I can still talk, and bore the daylights out of most people, however, writing is not my forte. And then I stop and think..... besides that, who could really give a hoot what I have been doing anyway? Oh well, I'll take a stab at it anyway. After graduation, I traveled. I really wasn't prepared to go on to college or university. I did not know it at the time, but later came to realize that besides being OCD, I also live with attention deficit disorder. Getting back to traveling, Steve Corey ("71") and I were best friends at the time. Steve and I decided we were going to Europe. It turned out to be an incredible adventure.. If I recall correctly, we landed at Heathrow, the London Airport. Corey's folks met some people from London when they were vacationing in the Caribbean, and hooked us up with a dinner and place to stay on our first day. They gave us suggestions on touristy things to do. At the time, we said we were students, but as I reflect back, I would now s...Expand for more
ay we looked more like homeless people. A lot of it seems foggy, but I recall seeing the Tower of London, the Towers Bridge, The National Maritime Museum and Greenwich Observatory, a replica of one of Captain Cooks ships on the River Thames, 10 Downing Street, Speakers' Corner at Hyde Park, Saint James Park, The Whispering Gallery of Saint Paul's Cathedral, Piccadilly Circus, and we even saw Queen Elizabeth and Emperor Hirohito in a horse drawn carriage ride to Buckingham Palace. It still puts a smile on my face when I think about the Royal Horse Poop Scoopers and Street Sweepers at the tail end of the Queen's entourage. What a hoot! Somewhere in there, we made a side trip to Stonehenge. I also remember thinking that I should have paid more attention to European history and art. We then caught a train to Scotland, where we took in a car race at Brands Hatch, and the Jim Clark memorial Museum in Duns. Jim Clark was a famous British Formula One racing driver. Then we were off to Edinburgh to see the castle and more cathedrals. I'll have to finish this later in installments......... it is getting late, and need to prep for my day job..... more about that later Cheers, Ron Sieber
