Ronald's Story

Since we graduated in 1974,life went nothing like I hadn't planned. Notice I said hadn't? It went as a blurr for various reasons. For the summer of 74 I spent in St. Petersburg Fl. with a buddy of mine named Kenny Jacobsen. It was a great time sun, fun on the beach, parties, getting a job for supporting myself. [Well you know responsibility had to rear it's ugly head.] The fun in Florida lasted until the end of August, when my buddy decided he wanted to join the Army on the buddy system. I didn't like the idea of going to Vietnam getting shot at so we parted ways. I moved back to good old Mudville with my tail between my legs. I moved back home to Mom and Dad and got a job at Hawthorn Mall as a grounds maintenance man. From that time on it has been 35 years of work. Ever stop to think of how many hours of your life were spent at work? I went back to dating my high school sweetheart Donna Trost, and ended up marring her on July 19th 1975. [Mike Plymale if you are reading this there are way too many crazy times to include.] He was my room mate from September 74 till I got married. My new bride and I got our first house in Round Lake Beach in fall of 1976. A 1 bedroom house for $19,000, which at the time was a lot of money, not so much now!!!!!! On June 4th 1978 God blessed us with our first child named Michelle Dawn which high school NEVER prepared us for. Do you remember how helpless you felt when your child got sick? After 4 years we had our second child Eric Edmund on February 1st 1982. We moved to Ingleside Il. in August of 1983.While we lived there I changed careers and went to work as a laborer/truck driver at Osman Construction with my brother Bob. Donna worked at Baxter on the weekends noon to midnight. We raised our family together until Donna decided we got married too young, and wanted a divorce. That came as quite a hard blow to me because I planned on being married for life.[Another thing high school didn't prepare us for] All that happened in July of 1988. I kept living in my house and had arranged visitation with my children . Life must go on, so I started dating and found a beautiful woman who had the same dreams and ideals I had. Her name was Robbin. She was going through a difficult divorce because of there 2 year old daughter Suzan. I had fallen head over heels in LOVE with Robbin. A short period of time after her divorce {the next day] I asked her to marry me and she said yes!!! I was the luckiest man in the world. At that time [November of 1988] she lived in Palos Hills 46 miles away. So we decided for her and her daughter to move into my house while we waited for our wedding in May of 1989. She never had the story book wedding most girls dream of in her first marriage,so we planned for one together. At that time she was a legal secretary at a law firm in downtown Chicago making good money, so why not she deserved anything she wanted, I was in LOVE. Also while we were waiting to get married we convinced Donna to let my children move back home with us because we could provide a stable home environment for them. Fancy weddings are not cheap!!!!! It is not good to start out your marriage in debt but, we did. Three years after we ...Expand for more
were married Robbin lost her job. She decided she wanted to stay home and open our home as a licensed day care. Why not then she would be home for our children? We opened Lots of Love Daycare in 1993. {WHAT WAS I THINKING] For the following 8 years we had 5 children from infant to age 3 in our home from 6 am. to 6pm. 5 days a week. SO NOT WORTH IT!!!! It caused a strain on everyone in our home. But through it all we raised our children to the best of our abilities. In 2000 I lost my job in December 1 week before Christmas. If you know construction you know the middle of winter is the worst time to look for something new. So a friend from my church said his brother was part owner of a heating and air company and they needed a driver. I went to Hawthorn Heating looking for a drivers job but, during my interview the boss felt with my experience with electrical and plumbing I would fit as an apprentice hydronic installer.[installing boilers and radiant in floor heat] I took that job in Feb. 2001. After 4 months on the job I was promoted to lead installer. Isn't it strange how life changes so quickly without warning?{Another thing high school didn't prepare us for} My wife also changed careers to become a director of the arts department at Willow Creek Church in Barrington. By this time our children were pretty much grown and we started to drift apart. The spring of 2005 we were divorced and I still stayed in the house I spent 20 years of my life fixing up. I guess I can fix houses but not relationships. August 18 2005 my Dad passed away. I went to Florida for his funeral. My parents move there in 1978 and made it their home. While in Florida my mom asked if I would like to move and start another new adventure in my life. I did just that!!!!! I sold my house which after refinancing it to buy out 2 ex-wives had no value left. Sold all my possessions and packed what was left into a minivan and moved to Florida. I arrived Feb. 3 2006. I spent most of my time working around my moms house just repairing things my dad could no longer do in the 7 years before his death. I also totally remodeled my little sisters house. She lives 2 houses away. In November 2006 I was informed that I could take an early pension at age 50 from the laborers union. SO I DID!!! The only down side to us old folks not having a job is no insurance. And you all know how bad that is. So I took a job at a well known Supermarket chain here in the south called Publix. At first I was hired as a Deli clerk part time. After 7 months there the store manager asked if I would be interested in going full time as store custodian. Well I took it more hours and really good benefits {retiring is not all that great} At my age I still need to work or it is a quick way to stop living. The great thing about my working for me now is no stress about losing my job and no bills hanging over my head, life is good. A quick update on my sisters and brother who all graduated MHS Pam lives next door to my mom and I Loris lives on the other side of Pam. Sally still lives in Mundelein and Bob lives in Treavor Wi. More to follow as life goes on GOD WILLING ron g. And believe it or not I hated writing in school.....
