Ronald's Story
I didn't have that many friends in high school and did not keep up with any of them after graduation, so you may not remember me at all, but that's my fault, not yours. I was nerdy and shy, studied hard and got high honors, but high school life is pretty much a blur. Could not name a single teacher I had. When one reaches 70, one can't help thinking back to where we once were and paths taken for better or worse. After missing all those reunions I got curious and found this forum.
After West I went straight to 4 years at UW Madison and got a BA degree in fine arts. Became interested in theater stage design and developed skills in design and construction, but I couldn't draw worth beans. In the theater dept. I did design the set for "Julius Caesar" (which i don't remember either.) Worked in a couple of theaters in St. Louis and then snagged a property job at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. Worked at the Guthrie with a great group for 10 years up to 1981.
In the 1970s I spent more time with my main love of old movies, and ran a film society from 1971-'74. My future wife Christine was an early patron - she came early to set up to tape sound tracks to Marx Bros. films. Hard to not notice that....Expand for more
We got married in 1976, had one son Jeff in 1981 (now a senior programmer for LinkedIn in San Francisco), and are still going strong at 40 years and counting. After two house in Minneapolis, we moved to the western suburb of Shorewood these last 24 years.
In the 70s I invented a business around selling 16mm public domain films to colleges that had film history courses. Home video only started around 1980 and before then they had to rent the same prints like Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Birth of a Nation every year. This developed into a full time job when I left the Guthrie and continues today. I mainly sell public domain films (no longer copyrighted) to TV stations and for online streaming at fesfilms.com.
Chris is retired now from being an elementary school secretary. We are fixing the house up at the moment. Jeff and his wife Amanda will visit in 5 weeks. I work at the computer much of each day creating little videos, Facebook, acquiring new films, taking orders, updating the website, eating well and napping all I want. I still have a great interest in watching vintage movies and always lots to see on TCM and online.
So life has been pretty fulfilling. I hope most of you can say the same.
