Ronda's Story

Twenty years ago we were told that we were the future. ¿Go forth and lead¿, that was the general idea. Maybe we still are the future. Certainly we¿re the present, but being leaders of today isn¿t nearly as important as being the leaders and listeners of our children. The future begins in the past¿ or perhaps it would be better to say that the future begins in the present, with the children of today. Our children. Whether we are mothers or fathers, stepparents, aunts, uncles or friends of parents with children, we can make a difference with each and every child or teen that is in our lives. We need to teach our children to love our diversity. It is what makes us strong. Thin, fat, gay, straight, short, tall, atheist, Christian, Muslim, black, white, liberal or conservative, etc. We can have our differences. We WILL have our differences, but if we don¿t learn to listen to each other and hear each other, then where is our future going? We do not have to agree. We have to respect. We have to teach our children respect and appreciation of who and how we are¿ and maybe, just maybe, if we learn to listen to our children and give them a voice NOW, then maybe we can learn something too. It¿s their world. They see it clearer than we can. Positiv...Expand for more
e changes are possible. When a child comes home from school and uses words to describe another person in a negative way, what do you say? Do you ignore it? Did they hear it from you? Do you talk at them or do you talk to them? Do you let them understand that the world can only improve with love and understanding¿ not hate, not an unyielding, uncompromising singular vision. Words have power. Words can hurt and they can heal and they make a better world¿ or a worse one. Words beget actions¿ hateful world beget hateful actions¿ Don¿t sit back and let children believe that calling people names or treating them badly for being different is okay¿ or just the current slang and ¿the way things are¿. It¿s NOT okay. Make them understand that our diversity should be embraced. No one person should be put down for being different in any way. It¿s hurtful and hateful and it¿s not the way to make a better future for us all. Love, respect and appreciation is so important. Hate and disrespect is learned. Lead by example. Each situation has at least two sides to it. Often it is way more multifaceted than that. Maybe we can teach our children to see each side. It makes no difference if we don¿t agree with each side¿ at least it¿s a start.
