Rose's Story

Life I am still living in Houston and retired from Aldine ISD in June of 2005 after serving as principal of MacArthur High School for 11 years. It was really a neat experience to go back to my high school and serve as a teacher, assistant principal and then principal. The kids in that community are still wonderful. I now work part-time for a foundation based in Dallas that handles contributions from Bill and Melinda Gates, the Dell Foundation, the Texas Education Agency, etc. and awards grants to Texas high schools for the purpose of reforming and improving student performance. The Communities Foundation of Texas that I work for assist in these reform efforts. I really enjoy this work. e continued involvement with the district. I had the opportunity thoughtout my career to work with and stay in contact with some of the teachers we had at MacArthur which includes Sue Wooten, Kitty Spence, Mary Raby , Carrie Durley , Nancy Thurman and Marine Jones to name a few. Larry Rice our principal passed away a few months ago. Nancy Etie passed away about seven years ago. College I attended Sam Houston State University for both my BA and my Masters in ED. Along the way I took courses at San Jacinto Junior College, Stephen F Austin and University of Houston. In October of 2019, I received the honor of having the newest Aldine ISD high school dedicated in my name, the Rose M Avalos Early College and P-Tech High School. This has been the greatest honor of my life.
