Rose's Story
Life
When I was at Montclair HS, my name was Rose Marie Remley - but I married during my senior year and became Rose Marie Klaassen. When I was at UPS, my name was Klaassen. Now, it is Suemoto.
I have 4 children and a bunch of grandchildren. Overall, I am enjoying my life. The last 40+ years has not always been easy for me, but I am a survivor, and where I am at now in my life is good. I expect the next 20 years to be the best yet.
My current husband is second generation Japanese-American. Before he retired he was Assistant Fire Chief in Honolulu. He cooks and cleans. Firemen are great cooks, if you haven't heard.
I enjoy reading in my spare time - have always loved this. Other than that, no serious hobbies. Although from time to time I tinker with the idea of writing a book.
I recently retired and am enjoying life. I participate in Toastmasters, serve as tresurer of our condo association and facilitate a senior citizens writing group. I also coach a middle school speech team.
We live in Hawaii. Sounds great - and it is. But it is not all surf and sand. The cost of living is very high and pretty much everyone works - some two or three jobs. I was fortunate. I only worked...Expand for more
one job for the last seven years prior to retirement. But for 11 years I worked two.
But I love the weather, of course. And love the multi-ethnic make-up of Hawaii. It truly is a special place.
College
I went to college - starting off at Chaffey, then some 20 year later at Tacoma Community College and finally graduating at the age of 43 from the University of Puget Sound. Would not have been able to accomplish this without the support of my husband at the time, Karl Klaassen.
I have a BA in English and Secondary Education. I loved college and if money was no object, would be a professional student. I may still go back at some point or other and look at getting an MFA.
Workplace
I worked as the Manager of Provider Communications at the BlueCross and BlueShield plan in Honolulu. I was responsible for a staff of eight and all publications, both print and webpages that go to providers. Loved the work, but it involved many long hours.
Also taught adult education for about 12 years.
Retirement
Retirement has been good. I am actively involved with Toastmasters, and am doing some freelance writing and editing. I recently completed a novel and am looking for an agent. Live is good.
