Rose's Story
Life
Posted January 31, 2006
Born in Brooklyn, NY 1943. Attended PS 238 across the street from my house on East 9th Street. Moved to Northampton, Mass. in 1952. Who knew it was to become the Lesbian capitol of the world? It was so quiet, serene, empty and collegiate (Smith College), 50 Jewish families. Moved back to Brooklyn in 1956 (my Dad missed his family on Long Island), rented a railroad flat in Flatbush, after 8 months, bought a house in Franklin Square, Long Island. House sold in 2005, 90-year-old Mom living in Smithtown with younger brother.
Finished high school at Sewanhaka HS, 1961. Went to work. Never went to college because my Dad didn't want to finance something that would "go to waste when you would just get married anyway." I fooled him! I never got married! Stayed alive by working at wonderful jobs from photo-printer for professional photograpers, to short order cook in restaurants, bistros, bars, you name it. Spent 14 years as Director of Activites in a 150 bed nursing home (you noticed I made caps out of D of A!). They sent me to school for continuing education, and I ostensibly got a college education after all, ...Expand for more
and I fooled them, too by not getting married! After they folded, I started a house-cleaning service that turned into a tagsale/antiquing business, and did that for about 15 years before I sold the business and moved to the Taconic Valley in beautiful Upstate NY, where I can see the Berkshires from my livingroom window, or drive 15 minutes to view the majesty of the Green mountains of Vermont. I save on fuel oil by burning wood in my two wood stoves, and love the place and the people. Quite by accident, I acquired 7 cats, who by their own design, run my life. I work a quiet little job in a little supermarket 20 miles from my home. In the warmer weather, I sell ephemera at a local flea market. I enjoy the company of many friends and acquaintences. All in all, not bad. Not perfect, but then, what is? It's my little piece of life, and I did the best with what was dished out to me, and by choice, I now live in a most beautiful area with changes of season, rippling brooks, friendly people, and the clearest night skies.
I welcome old friends to my biography. My fondest memories are those I have as a child in Brooklyn on East 9th Street.
