Rosemary's Story

I always wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. My friends and family thought that would be a great idea. My second choice was to be a doctor. As it turns out, they were right. Teaching was a great idea. Even though I did not go to college to be a teacher, I am one anyway. I teach at my church. As a matter of fact I teach the youth that are 12-14 years old. I guess that is my punishment for being such a rough rider in middle school. I enjoy teaching the youth. I even teach on my job. I work at the University of South Florida in the medical records department of our student health services. We have students who work with us and I find myself teaching them also. I teach them about life. It is such a wonderful thing to be able to share knowledge with others that will help them. It is even more rewarding when they come back and say what they have learned. Many of our students have gone on to have their own businesses and work in great jobs. I was diagnosed with Lupus in 1996 and it was a little bit of a blow to hear those words come out of the doctor's mouth. I was a little worried at first but it did not last long. I had prayed and asked God to show me how I may help others even before I knew what was wrong with me. I have certainly been able to do just that. I am doing extremely well. I have had some bad days but most have been great. I had pluerisy and mild pericarditis in 2004. I had not been able to do a lot of physical activity. Most of you who know me know that I have been pysical all of my life. My mother says that I was very active even before sha gave birth to me. I set out in 2003 to get back in shape so that I could run again. My husband encouraged me to do like I would if I was just starting out running. I had to build up to it. At first I begin to do the stairs at wor...Expand for more
k. I started out doing 4 flights up and down 4 times. I built up to seven times and I began to ride my bike five miles one way to work. I got stronger and in 2007 I ran a 5K. I thought I did pretty good. My time was 32 minutes. For those of you who run, that might not sound so impressive. But if you knew where I started out you would understand my excitement about this accomplishment. You can see some of the pictures on my profile. This year, my co-worker convinced me to do a 15K in January. I was a little nervous at first, but I finished in 2 hours and 23 minutes. I ran some and walked a lot. No one warned me that my toes would hurt so bad. I was again thankful to God for allowing me to make such an accomplishment. Then in Feburary we ran another 5K. I am just excited that I can run again and not feel like I am about to die. Now that I am older, life has certainly taken on a new perspective. I still enjoy clowning around and having a good time. I just don't think so much about the what ifs. It is great growing older even with the aches and pains that come along with it. I am just grateful to be alive and doing as well as I am. I do plan to continue getting stronger in my body, mind and spirit. Last year my husband celebrated his 5oth birthday, next year I will celebrate mine, 2010 we will celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary and in 2011 I hope to leave my job after 30 years of service. So I will be celebrating for the next few years, if the Lord is willing. It is such a joy to reach certain landmarks in your life. After the celebrations of my own life, I will also be celebrating the in the lives of my friends and their families. God has certainly been good to me and I am so glad to be one of His children. This is only a part of my story. Until the next time, you all be blest.
