Roy's Story

When I was 8 years old my family moved from Brooklyn to Queens. I attend the first ever seen by my family and myself an all wooden school called P.S.161. My sister Diane who is two years older than I am, we could not beleive our eyes. My older brother Bobby lucked up and went to JR.High 59 that same year. Staring my new life off in the 3rd grade I finished 161 and went to JR 231 in which I now was in a school no one laughed at. Plus this school had a woundeful group of people who all got along with each other. In the 8th grade I had a strong interest in running track. By the time I went to Springfield Gardens High School I joined the track-team with few of my best friends, Bruce Wright, James Eddie Robinson and Sam Powell. In my freshman year I was the only freshman that ran Varsity X-Country. Our freshmen year was the best yaar I ever had running track and X-Country. First; out of 350 other freshman I won a 3rd place spot in the City Champs. However, with a combind score with 6 other freshmen from our school we won the City Champs that year! 1966, ROY HARRIS, JAMES EDDIE ROBINSON, BRUCE WRIGHT, MARTIN FIELDS, STAN STONE, SAM POWELL,AND PATTY LA BELLS LONG TIME MANAGER BUDD ELLISON. Our next X-Country meet was the Queens Champs again running against all high school freshmen teams of 7 men each I was able to win a 2nd place. We as a team of the 7 of us won the Queens Champs as well. Then four of us ran the Brooklyn Tech Annuel 4 mile relay winning 1st place. By now we were the team to bet. Indoor season we all took turns running the freshmen 880 relay. that race was a much faster race in...Expand for more
which we never won under 2nd place it seemed like we were unbitable. one week we would take first place, another week we would take 2nd place I remeber Bruce Wright coming up to me showing me the metal he won that weekend in the 880 relay. I was so happy for him. So I went to the couch and told him it was my turn to win a metal in the 880 relay. Up until that time I mainly ran long distance races. Being that the next 880 race was the last freshman race of the year Mr. Kass our couch let me ruin that relay. And again Springfield Gardens won first place! Outdoor season only let us run the one mile relay But by that time we were in the best shape we could be in. Two weekends in a row was all we were allowed to run. And to our surprize Martin Fields, Eddie Robinson, Bruce Wright, and myself Roy Harris won both races ending with the fact that no other freshman High School Track and X-Country team had ever won so many races in the history of high school sports. In the next 3 years I ran many races we equil results. I loved running track and X-Country. I became Captain of the team in 1969 to 1970 in my senior year at Springfield. To this day I still can remeber the joy and laughter we had along with the school spirit to back us up at every track meet, basketball, and baseball game we took part in. At that time in my life I was very happy to be in a school with such winning spirit. I hardly ever see the guys I made high school history with but one day while talking to Eddie Robinson on the phone he made me realize that while in high school we were the BEST OF THE BEST!!!
