Roy's Story

Life After graduation, I played in the Montclairs, a Rock band with guitarist Gary Dodson (passed in '97) and Ralph Hinds (Bass) (living in Madera, CA) and drummer Chuck Fisher class of 64. (after BG Hi and the Air Force, he road a motorcycle for the CHP). I majored in music at ELA. In 65 joined Army and went to Europe into the 76th Army Band (France & Germany). In 70 got married. In 72 took job as an automotive Parts Mgr at Las Vegas Dodge. Got divorced. Was diagnosed w/lymphatic cancer (I'd been exposed to agent orange while serving). Was treated with cobalt radiation at VA Med Ctr in Long Beach, CA; Cancer is gone. Then was Body Shop Mgr at Lincoln dealership in Costa Mesa. In 78 moved to LA, had various jobs. In 89 went to work at VA Med Ctr in West LA. working in administration. In 96 moved back to BG to care for my parents. Dad passed in July 17, 2001. Mom passed 12-24-04 at 96. 2021 update: I'm still in Bell Gardens, but I'm selling my place. Planning on moving to OC. Military On Nov 1, 65 I joined the Army with good friend and 1963 BG graduate, Ralph Hinds. He went into medical, I went to the US Naval School of Music in Norfolk, VA. Was assigned to 289th Army Band, in Verdun, France. Charles De Gaul had asked us to leave by then. Not the band specifically, but the US Army in general. I was only w/289 for 2weeks, then went to Orleans to the 76th under Bandmaster JT Winters for about 2 months. Then Samuel F Brown, Jr. became our Chief. In Apl 67, after several Honor Guard/Parade ceremonies closing the bases from Bordeaux in the south of France to SHAPE HQ at Camp De Louge, (Supreme Headquart...Expand for more
ers, Allied Powers Europe) we moved to Worms, Germany (As the final group of US Military to leave France.) After the army I played a short while in a rock band, with Gary Dodson. I then got into the automotive field as Parts Mgr, then as a Body Shop Mgr. In 1989 I started work at the VA Med Ctr in West LA, CA. In the admin department. Was there for 23 years. I retired in 2015, after getting a heart valve transplant from a cow. The cow didn't do the transplant. Just donated the valve, but I don't think the cow was using it. I don't think she was aware of any of this actually. I'd like to think she ended up at Whole Foods as they have good quality meats. My hearing isn't that good any more, so I haven't been doing music for a while, although I wrote, arranged and produced a Christmas single: and other songs. I miss my music. UPDATE: 30 Sep 2021. I just recently re-joined Classmates. In May, I sold my property in BG and moved to Seal Beach, about 1/4 from the beach and 2 blocks from Main St. It's nice here. I'm still a bachelor, but I'm really good at it. I do enjoy retirement. If I'd known it was this good, I'd done it out of high school. My hearing has gotten worse, so I'm out of music. That's what I miss the most. A NEW LEVEL OF MENTAL AWARENESS I have read Dianetics, The Modern Science of Mental Health. I can honestly say, Mr. Hubbard has solved the workings and problems of the Human Mind. No one else ever had. Psychiatry today still doesn't know how the mind works, yet it's all explained in Hubbard's book! I'm glad I read it. I recommend it.
