Roy's Story

Military After dropping out of the seminary, I joined the Air Force Security Police. I got to see Mt. Pinatubo (Phillipines) blow up and I was a Desert Storm I participant (Prince Sultan Air Base, Saudi). It was a miracle but I received my honorable discharge after a four year tour of duty; I was a rebel and hated every minute of active duty. The cop experience got me a job with the DC Housing Authority Police which I will never forget; I only lasted 2 years. If anyone has children who wish to join do not let them. All you do in the military is drink and pick up women. ...Expand for more
Most good jobs pay college tuition, one does not have to rely upon the military. Also, after being in Desert Storm I, I feel that I can say with authority that our current impasse in Iraq is a complete waste of young, blue-collar men. There were two positive things I can say about my military service. The first is I got to grow up. I was very immature until 21 or 22. Lastly, I gained some indispensable material for my future best selling novel. The New Yorker, Atlantic Monthly and Playboy all have disagreed so far but I still mail all of them a short story every month.
