At WGH I graduated in 1964 and was in the vocational electric shop program for two years that started my lifetime career in electricity. As a teenager I was always trying to learn more about electricity and still today attend numerous classes to increase my knowledge and professional skills to maintain my professional registrations. My career as an electrical design engineer started in 1966 after graduation from a two year technical college as a electrical design drafter for power and control systems at The Electric Furnace Company (CMI EFCO) in Salem Ohio, a manufacturer of industrial heat treating furnaces for the steel industry. I returned to YSU (1966-1973) while working at EFCO and Republic Steel Corp in Youngstown Ohio to receive a Bachelor of Engineering degree in electrical engineering.
I joined Morrison Knudsen (MK) Corp (a.k.a. The...Expand for more
H.K. Ferguson Company) (1973-1997) and was involved in many industrial design-build type projects such as for Anheuser Busch for new brewery in Fairfield California and brewery expansion in Jacksonville Florida as both the design electrical engineer and then moving to be the site construction electrical engineer for all electrical systems including equipment startup and commissioning. I was also the design construction engineer assigned to the design and renovation of the M1 Abrams Lima Army Tank Plant (LATP) in Ohio from 1977-1979. In February 1980, the first M1 Abrams rolled out of LATP. After a contract with Chrysler the plant began producing the Abrams at a rate of 30 month.
In 1979 MK transferred me to the Washington DC area to work on a federal DOD contract with MPO at Ft. Meade MD until 1990. The work included travel all around the world to work on campus style building electrical systems such as lighting, power generation and distribution, building assessment studies, power quality (PQ) studies with recommendations for improvements based on life cycle analysis. Later with MK and then Jacobs Engineering Group Inc (1997-2004) my experience in the DC area as a electrical engineer includes a broad range of industrial and government electrical design and construction projects. Projects have included Westinghouse, Delaware State Prisons, DC-area schools, FAA, USDA, Federal Bureau of Prisons, DOD, GSA, and SSA.
Currently I am with the Department of State, Overseas Building Operations as an electrical engineer with the design engineering group responsible for design and renovation of electrical systems in the U.S. Embassies and Consulates located in hundreds of countries.
My worldwide travel has included visits to well over fifty countries. In 1988 I discovered my lovely wife Maria in Seoul Korea and we were later married in 1993. Maria has travelled with me during my business travels to many American cities and countries including Europe and China. Maria is now retired and was a former English teacher in Korea and later after receiving a Bachelor degree at UMBC as a computer engineer. Maria is now active as a soprano chorus singer with the DC opera group VLOC (Victorian Lyric Opera Company).
Maybe I will retire when I am 77 in 2024, the same year as my my 60th WGH-1964 high school reunion, but it depends as I still have lots of fun working and the associated worldwide travel.
