More about Ruben:"The best advice we will ever give won’t be written or spoken, it will be in the example of how we live our life! - Bill I’ve been told I should be dead, locked up or homeless and on drugs. Shutter the thought…At the ripe young age of 54 (I feel like I’m in my 20’s) I still have a lot of life to live and a lot of loving to give. As a child I suffered from severe asthma, today, GONE… I was born to serve, to do something special and to make a difference! In the fall of 1971 and at the tender age of 36, my mother was tragically killed in an automobile accident; I was 14 years old, the eldest of five still living at home. She died leaving behind five children; two under the age of five and a husband. Not only were we all devastated emotionally, but economically it was disaster. We lost our home, our security…we lost it all! In the spring of 1971, mom left home after enduring a pretty bumpy marriage to pops. That summer, me, and a brother not much younger, were left to run amuck. We were introduced to a couple of guys close to our same age. As it turns out, these two guys were a couple of thug hoodlums (my perception) gang bangers! Our short lived association seemed kind of cool at the beginning. Thank goodness my brother and I had enough sense to get out of the rain. Exit the hoodlums and enter Mr. AFFLUENT; with the cool car, a girl friend, a nice neighborhood and a great family. Plus, he was a drummer in a local band that would soon offer me an abundance of popularity. Mr. Affluent and his family rescued me from the streets and shared with me the gift of a nice home, safety and security. However, with a motto like “a friend with weed is a friend in deed,” other than the band that I was fortunate to become a member of, I realized that hanging out with Mr. AFFLUENT & COOL long term, would not be in my best interests. Exit Mr. AFFLUENT and enter Mr. Horn Rimmed Glasses Geek, (HRGG) and more AFFLUENT than the affluent drummer. By now, the fall of 1972, I was living with pops and his new bride; that is to say I had a place to sleep, and actually did, sometimes! Shortly after meeting Mr. HRGG, he and his family moved to a very exclusive coastal community; very posh and nice to say the least! Mr. HRGG and his family saw something in me at a time when I was desperately trying to figure out how and...Expand for more
where I fit in. Had it not been for these great people, I most likely would not have completed (I wanted to quit 100 times) my college education, nor would I have discovered that the God that I had been exposed to and learned about early in my life would provide and ease my pain(s). Fast forward to 1988…age 33, divorced, 2 children from my first marriage and a new wife. Enter young Mr. Snot Nosed, 16 Year Old, Didn’t Know Nothing about Nothing! A young man, ½ my age, who planted the seed that led to my enlistment into the navy reserve in 1989, ain’t that something! Because this young man, for whatever reason, believed that I (his father had been in the navy) would be a good fit for the navy, or perhaps vice versa, I’ve been able to see, do and experience things that have changed my life forever; giving me the opportunity to serve my country men/women, and make a difference…I believe that I was born to serve and that I have a lot more living to do and a lot to share. How about you, have you settled, are you done living, giving and dreaming, or are you flat ready to ROCK? Hey ruben, this is Melissa scottorn. We were listenin 2 B’s call 2nite. It was so good to hear ya!! Thank u 4 everything u have taught us. U have been such a blessing 2 our family. Ur example of servant leadership has been HUGE 4 us! Love u ruben! Chief, good hearing from you! I’m doing well; my civilian job is keeping me busy. The Navy as always is just a privilege to be a part of…let’s see: I write junior sailor evals, which I get MAX compliments for (you should feel proud about that, you had a major influence). I’m the LPO…We are one of the top rated units in the NOSC and I have all of my junior sailors realizing what our mission is; and going to shipyards for their AT’s (whether they like it or not). I have to get back to work…stay in touch! Take-care, ET1 Chief Garcia, I just wanted to say thank you for all your advice, your support, and your friendship over all the many years. Through all the Ops and all the ULTRAs, and even FWD ALPHA, you were always an example to me and always helped me understand what I didn't know and worked with me. Well, today, I am not a Chief. But if I make it through Transition, and am privileged enough to wear the anchors, I will be one soon. If I do, Chief, know that you were a big part of that reason. So once again, I sincerely thank you for all you shared with me and all you have given me. Very Respectfully, LSC (sel) Kevin Hanley I love you Chief. You are the BOMB...........Absofu**inglutely!!!!!!!!!!! You are the best...I don't think I could have gotten through our first deployment without you. thank you for everything...you are the BEST......;P".
