Rudolph's Story

Military I started out as a Private in 1972. I completed basic at B-5-1 Ft.Jackson, SC and went from there immediately to Fort Gordon, Ga. for training as a 72B (Telecommunications Specialist)and I graduated in Aug. '72 and was selected to attend the newly started Basic NCOES system as a PFC. I attended that for 6 weeks and was washed out because I couldn't get an overweight SGT to negotiate an obstacle on the survival course. I was further assigned to Chunchon, Korea to the 226th Sig Co. I spent 13 months there and attained the rank of E4. Met some great people there and was one of the only black enlisted that had there family there. My daughter was one of the very few black kids in Chunchon and the Koreans loved her. I was reassigned from there to 530th S&S Bn at Fort Bragg, NC. Ah, Fort Bragg; Hay St., Merchison Rd. Bragg Blvd., D2, Catherine Lake, Fayetville State and duty. I was selected as the soldier of the year for COSCOM for FY '74 and appointed as Acting SGT. Received a set of Dress Blues as one of the perks for being the soldier of the year and can to this day still get in them!!! Reenlisted to leave Fort Bragg and was assigned to 67th Sig Bn, Fort Gordon, Ga. Stayed at home (my home town, Aiken) and enjoyed being there for almost 18 months. I made SGT/E5 there and left for Germany the same month. Arrived in Mannheim to the 97th Sig Bn and enjoyed a great tour there. Reassigned to Fort Gordon, Ga. to the 1st STB, (Signal Training Bde)and got promoted to SSG/E6 there. Unfortunately, I also was on my way to getting divorced there. Volunteered for Drill Sergeant School in Jul.'80 and was selected for attendance in Sep. '80. Graduated in Dec. '80 and was assigned to C/3/1, the best damn company on the hill, sir!!! Spent two (paid) years on the trail there and worked for an additional cycle while awaiting a class date for DLI. I drove accross the country to ...Expand for more
make my start date at DLI which was supposed to be June '83, but due to some mix up I did not start until Jul. '83. I spent the entire month of June, getting up, checking with my Platoon Sergeant and then off on my own for the rest of the day. I rode my motorcycle down to Big Sur and Seaside and Carmel and as far along the Pacific Highway as you could go at that time, because there had been these huge rock slides and the highway was impassable for some 60-80 miles for most of the time I was there. I loved DLI. Studying required some real "sho nuff" getting down to it to stay there, but there was so much to do afterwards. My classmates appreciated (some times) my Drill Sergeant background and reminding them that we were "still in the Army." I used to love going 30 minutes to the south and enjoying 20 degrees change in the weather. Santa Cruz was always some much warmer than Monterey. Graduated in Mar. '84 and was assigned to Bad Hersfeld, West Germany. This was a subcommunity of Fulda and I was the NCOIC of Housing Referral!! Best job that I ever loved and hated at the same time. Left there and returned to Drill Sergeant Status. I also got promoted to SFC/E7 there. I did 1 year in BT and then went to the Fitness Training Company for 18 months. I went from there to B, 120th which is also at the Reception Bn. I was the Operations Sgt. for two months before I was selected to be the 1SG. I was the 1SG until I was assigned to Korea in Aug. '91. I made 1SG/E8 in May. '92. I became the 1SG of HHC, 501st CSG and enjoyed a very successful tour there. I was reassigned to Fort Jackson as the 1SG of B, 369th AG Bn and stayed there until I retired. I in essence turned down SGM Academy by electing to retire rather than complete the correspondence course that I was enrolled in for the Academy. No regrets. I went on terminal leave in Nov. '95 and went on the retired rolls in Mar. '96.
