Rufus's Story
After graduating from Ballard Hudson High School in June 1968, I enrolled at Mercer University that fall and earned a Bachelors degree in English. I began teaching in the Macon/Bibb County School System while pursuing a Masters in English Education at Mercer. Later, I earned both my Education Specialist degree at Georgia State University and the Doctor of Education degree at Nova Southeastern University, Fort Lauderdale FL. I spent 21 years in the Bibb County School System as a high school teacher, assistant principal, and principal before retiring early to pursue a business designing Character Education programs. orking with the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice as principal at the Macon Youth Development Campus (YDC). From there I moved to a Regional Principal position and retired as a Compliance Coordinator. I work part time with the agency; however, I miss the face to face interaction I had with teachers and students before my retirement.
I began bicycling right after the stay in place order was lifted and I enjoy bike rides on the Silver Comet Trail (Cobb County) and Panola Mountain Trail (DeKalb/Henry counties). So far, the farthest I have biked round trip was 40 miles on the Silver Comet Trail. Usually, I average 15 to 20 miles per ride.
