Russ's Story

Life Currently married (since 01/01/01), living in Beaverton, Oregon. Writing as an opinion columnist for the Oregon Herald (oregonherald.com/n/radicalruss) and blogging on RadicalRuss.net. I'm still playing music on my six-string bass guitar, though I'm not currently performing with any bands (first time since age 11!). After high school and throughout the 90's I performed professionally in the Boise music scene and toured throughout the Northwest. I am The Au Gratin Cheesehead (native Idahoan/Green Bay Packers fan... potatoes & cheese, get it?) and follow the Pack every chance I get. I also am a reluctant Portland Jail Blazers fan desperately wishing we'd win a few games. I am involved in liberal and progressive political causes, including canvassing for the Democratic Party (motto: being right sucks if you always lose the election), and volunteer work with the ACLU, Labor Unions, Homeless Activism, Drug Policy Reform, and GLBT Civil Rights. My wife and I have no kids, but we do support a friendly Schipperke/Pomeranian male dog named Peppy and a demanding all-black female Domestic Shorthair cat named Isis. College College was a real downer for me. All of my "radical" friends went to the University of Idaho, while Scott Hendrix and I were the only ones to go to Boise State. My freshman year was OK, gradewise, but socially and personally, I was miserable. I was an alternate on the Boise State Cheerleading Squad, and during that time I recorded a novelty rap song about BSU basketball star Arnell Jones. The song received lots of airplay for about three weeks, but since the song was stolen from me by a lo...Expand for more
cal radio DJ, I never got any credit or money. It didn't matter, because I couldn't have released the song without getting BSU in trouble with the NCAA. Fortunately or unfortunately, as I was flunking out of my succeeding years in college, I was beginning my career as a professional rock-and-roller.... Workplace My work life has two sides: music and computers. On the music side, I played in various bands throughout the late 80's and the 90's. I've played almost every genre - rock, country, R&B, hip-hop, punk, jazz - in many different cover bands and one original band (one of the names we rejected? Nirvana.) So I've had the long bleached-blonde super-teased Motley Crue hair, I've had the short, flat-top with lines shaved in the sides, black Vanilla Ice hair, and every crazy fashion mistake you've ever seen on a VH-1 Where Are They Now video. On the computer side, I've worked just about every position there is in IT, including help desk, service, programming, administration, and design. The height of that career (other than now) was probably in the mid 90's when I worked as a database consultant for a firm out of Boston. It was a 75% travel position (three weeks travel, one week home) where I did work in many major American cities (Boston, Manhattan, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver). I traveled a lot and saw a whole bunch of this country... enough to realize that I needed to live somewhere besides Boise, Idaho! Military Three days after graduation I reported to Basic Training at Fort Dix, NJ. I was a member of the 25th Army Band, Idaho National Guard, from 1985-1990. I attained the rank of SGT.
