Russ's Story

Caption For Photo: "Outback in the Dominican" (New picture as of 09/07/09) This one is of me and Madalyn in Punta Cana this past June. It was a great trip. We hope to go back someday. A message to my friends from "The Days That Used To Be": I am recently 65 and still feel fortunate to be on the planet. Got my "Red Card" for Medicare Part A the other day. I've done a lot of things since AHS graduation including surviving 8 years in the USAF, '64 thru '72. By the time I got out, I had earned a Bachelor's Degree from U. of Nebraska at Omaha. However, a degree in Sociology didn't open many doors: I was an Assistant Manager at your local Gino's Restaurant in Springfield - which I tired of quickly. Then I became a US Mail Carrier in Alexandria - which did not suit me either. So, I went back to graduate school at Arkansas State U. where I earned a Master's Degree in Rehab Counseling. I applied to 19 States and got on as a Counselor with the MO DESE Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. While working with DVR in North St. Louis for 8 years, I went to graduate school at St. Louis U., worked part time as an Adjunct Professor, and earned a PhD in Counselor Education. Eventually, I went into private practice full time for 20+ years, working primarly with DMH clients. I got bored with this and wanted more of a challenge. I cut my caseload from 45 to 4, and have worked as a Special Education Teacher since Fall 2003 in the Lindbergh School District. My primary mission has been to work with the cognitively impaired and emotionally disturbed students, supporting their efforts to remain in the regular education setting. This past school year I developed and facilitated the Sperreng Middle School's "Focus & COPE" program for the E.D. students. Along the way, I have had 2 marriages and 5 kids - three from the first and 2 from the second. The sec...Expand for more
ond marriage with Madalyn has been very good, and I am fortunate that my 5 kids still live in the St. Louis area. We visit often. They are Ethan 19, Lindsay 24, Stephen 36, Jennifer 37, & Deborah 39. I have 3 grandchildren that Deb has provided: Monica 20, Lane 5 & Liam 3. For fun over the years, I have enjoyed fishing, sailboat racing, and riding: 3 bass boats, one 25' slow as you can imagine sailboat, and I think 12 motorcycles. Currently I have a 2003 Harley Low Rider, but it's up for sale due to a health concern. The replacement vehicle is a Saturn Sky - so much more safe, convenient, and convertable. I used to love it! However, at 1,945 miles it got $2,300 in parts because it had comtaminated hydraulic fluid which ruined both the clutch and breaking system - it's a long story that continues to unfold. Getting back to AHS, there is still one Teacher who was memorable and I believe was very insturmental in laying the foundation for my educational progress. Mrs Ames taught me how to write. I truly do not even remember any other Teacher's names, and I can't find my 1962 Year Book to look them up. I am equally vacuous when it comes to remembering my associations with my almost all of my classmates ...and of course I still remember that the 1962 Year Book had my name wrong: "Wayne Payne", I think it said. I felt so anonymous. I still love you guys!!! Other things I do remember include the Atoms football games - I envied all of the Jocks, "Brigadoon" - a dear friend starred in it, arm wrestling the football players in Shop Class, playing guitar in a band called the "Tensions" & the "Battle of the Bands" at Hunter's Lodge, my dad's old red truck, the Proms, and a few very close friendships. That's about it - my life in an ever-growing nut shell. Thanks for taking the time to look me up and read this edited version of the other version. Russ
