Russell's Story

Life I loved living in Virginia, but the pace of life, and the traffic there was becoming too much. We had visited Florida during the hoildays and just loved it here (Northwest Fla. near Destin). So in 1991 we just started over.....moving here with nothing, no job, no house, just us! There were times early on when we thought that we had made a mistake, the pace was so slow and pay so low! I found a job as an Asst. Manager at Domino's Pizza, my wife Patty got a job as a secretary at a constuction firm. We are still at both! I am now the Area Supervisor (Keeps me busy!) and Patty is an Admin. Asst. Our son Russ Jr. gradurated from Ft. Walton Beach H.S, works at Domino's and is taking college classes. He is a great son! Things always seem to work out. The only thing we fear here is Hurricane Season...we were hit hard by Ivan in 1994.....33" of water in the house, 11 ft storm surge crashed into the neighborhood, seems like the waves were never going to stop! The house took a beating, (yes, we stayed through the storm) We lost everything on our bottom floor and in the garage we had 54" of water! . It was...Expand for more
life altering.....your focus changes. My wife, son and me, with the help of a lot of friends and our neighbors just got to work. It took almost a year to rebuild, but we are back, better than ever. (Hurricane Dennis flooded the area, but didn't make it into the house, (pictures!) and Katrina, which was over 200 miles away flooded our back yard!) They say it is the price you pay to live so close to the Gulf of Mexico, and they are right! We still love it here, although the secret is out......everyone is discovering the Emerald Coast, and now they too want to live here! 2006: I missed the reunion, the pictures that I received were great, Beth did a great job! August is not the time of year that I can leave Florida, too much can happen here! Although, if I had known that we would have a "mild" hurricane season, I could have made it! Maybe the next one! 2007: New Year...I always expect the best! Keep working on our house, seems like there is a never ending list of "projects" We hope for another quiet year, but we are ready for anything! Anyone who reads this....how about letting me know you were here!
