Russell's Story

Married Maryann Cruze after college. Spent a few years in Connecticut during and after college and then settled in Maryland. As of 9/09 we have two children, three grandchildren, and one more grandchild on the way. I've been in the computer industry all of my professional life. Started in software development, spent a little time in IT, then spent the majority of my time in software services/consulting. Spent a few years as a Linux/Open Source software "personality." Wrote columns for Infoworld and Processor magazines, participated as a panelist on "The Linux Show" webcast, spoke at numerous Linux conventions, wrote a book, contributed to a couple others, authored several dozen articles, quoted in the media a bunch of times, yada yada yada... Learning to play the Appalachian Dulcimer. Great instrument. Simple enough for just about anyone to play, yet versatile enough to grow with the player's skill. I'd love to give one to every child in America who wants to play an instrument, but believes that he/she lacks the talent. It's an instrument which hasn't "settled down" yet, so there's no right or wrong way to play it. Any way that works for you is considered okay. Built a few of them from kits as well. Particularly good instrument for folk music and traditional hymns (although not limited to such). I'm a Reformed Mennobapterian (there's only one other and he's due to be released from the psych ward any day now :^). Actually, I'm a Christian who cares less about the name over the door of the church than the Name written on the hearts of the people in the church. Off hand, I can think of at least 8 denominational tags I've worn in my life. I've preached several times over the years, but I've never been ordained in any denomination. Well, that's all I have time to write right now. Check back in a few years; maybe I'll remember to update this by then. ---- The promised update, a scant 12 years later... It's...Expand for more
now July of 2021 and much has changed. Maryann went home to be with the Lord in 2016 after losing her bout with breast cancer. I think most of her school friends know by now. That was one of the hardest days of my life. Sadly, my daughter hadn't fully gotten past the passing of her mother when her husband died of a massive heart attack. It's been a rough time for her and her 4 children, but she is fighting her way forward as best she can. My son also has 4 children, so holidays get crowded and noisy. Haven't had much time for the dulcimers since Maryann passed. Just don't have the heart for it right now. I am no longer a Reformed Mennobapterian. I now consider myself a Messianic Bapticostal, More churches; same faith. I am ordained now and am highly active in my local Pentecostal church which I've attended for over a decade now, currently doing both sound and livestreaming video for the church (yup, even after 30+ years, I'm still the A/V guy). I still preach several times per year. I am still in the software industry, but now in technical sales (wait... whaaaa?). Sales is literally the last role I ever expected to occupy in the computer industry. God occasionally does funky things when you are open to Him. Started out feeling like a fish out of water, but now I am beginning to have fun with it. I've become a fair shade tree mechanic over the years: cars, lawnmowers, lawn tractors, even the odd snowblower. Nothing elaborate, but I like to keep things moving. I am still driving a 22-year-old Jeep, not because I can't afford better, but the newer vehicles are almost impossible to work on without multi-thousand dollar scanners. I like the fact I can do some of my own diagnostics and repairs, even if I choose to have someone else do it sometimes. That's about all I can think to add right now. Maybe I think of something else in a few years. Best to everyone who has the misfortune of remembering me. ;)
