Russell's Story

Greetings Class of 1965 Here is my contact information: Russell S. Crooks, Class of 65 310 Lakeside Drive Grand Island, NE 68801 I'm a Veteran and served in the US Army 1966 to 1969. I was in West Germany for about two years and finished active duty at Ft. Carson, CO where I was a technical equipment supervisor, Green machine repair. On completion of military service I was hired by NASA and worked for Bendix Field Engineering on the whole Apollo Manned Space Flight Program, Goldstone, CA. What can I say, every day was thrill to be at work. When the Apollo mission was spooling down I was interviewed and hired by the Civil Engineering Division at the Marine Base and worked there for a year. In 1974 I transferred from Defence Department to Transportation and worked for the FAA. First a technician on the coast just north of LA. In three years was promoted to area Manager at Santa Barbara. Lived in Santa Barbara on the Beach then Oxnard and Ventura. My next challenge was a technical inspector at the GS-13 level in the FAA Regional Office in Los Angeles My area of responsibility was all of California, Arizona, Nevada and the Pacific Rim. After three long years of endless paperwork and travel I went back to field maintenance and was promoted to the FAA Resident Director in Pago Pago, American Samoa where I was director of maintenance and supervised the Air Traffic Control system. This position required frequent travel throughout the Pacific including the the other Samoan Islands, Hawaii and Guam. occasionally to the mainland to LA, DC and FL for meetings and training. Lived in Ventura and Pago Pago AS. On completion of my overseas tour I returned to Los Angeles and managed Employee Involvement and Labor Relations for about nine-hundred employees. In 1992 was promoted to Manager of the Nebraska FAA Sector office. Loved the Mid-West. FAA reorganized in 1996 and sent me to Kansas City, MO and I found field work again this time in Fairbanks, Alaska. In Fairbanks I was the...Expand for more
deputy manager responsible for equipment maintenance and operations. This organization has some three thousand facilities maintained by 10 supervisors and 240 technicians, engineers, logistics and other support people. After two Fairbanks winters, with temps in the minus 50s for several weeks at a time, I was given the opportunity to relocate to the banana belt of Anchorage. My first role was to manage the Y2K implementation and repair of the FAA systems-two years and a few months later with work at 700 locations and $12M in equipment replacement travel, we were done and ready for December 31st 1999. The Alaska Region was first in the Nation to complete the process. Hoteled it for a year in KC, Lived in Fairbanks, and Eagle River, AK Just before Christmas my boss comes to me and says Well Crooks now that Y2K is over I have your next assignment; you are the new Military Liaison for the Alaska Region and International Rep for Russia and the Northern Pacific Island Nations.. I won't go in to all the details but spent my last five years of government service, at a GS-15, had NO employees, and the majority of my customers were in fatigues. That was really cool. I retired from government service in April 2005 (yikes that was ten years ago). I did work for FEMA for a about a year helping clean up after Katrina (getting thousands of people out of free hotel rooms and back to work) and other disasters in New England and the Mid-West. I also worked as a contractor for about seven years managing construction projects and doing some design work replacing equipment for the FAA all over the US and in the Pacific. So what's new....owner The Rusty Lamp Antiques, LLC. I am located in Grand Island, in South-Central Nebraska just a few miles off I-80 and a block from Hwy 30 (the famous Lincoln Highway that runs from coast to coast-in 2013 was the road's centennial anniversary). The Rusty Lamp Antiques, LLC 322 West 3rd Street Grand Island, NE 68801 Best Regards Russell Go Riffs
