SatHanuman Singh's Story
I was born 1950, James Sven Erickson III in Providence, RI. I grew up in Rumford and attended all schools in East Providence 1955-1966. I attended and was a member of Newman Congregational Church in Rumford.
In 1961, I began playing goal tender in a youth hockey league at Meehan Auditorium (Brown University).
In my Sophomore year (1965-66), I was the second string goal tender on the Varsity Hocket Team at East Providence High School.
My parents separated in 1966.
I then moved to Florida and attended Titusville High School my last two years.
I enlisted in the US Air Force in June 1968 and served for 2 years and three months. I was honorably discharged and moved back to New England.
I attended Brevard Community College in 1971-72 (Brevard CC (US History, World Religions).
I adopted the Sikh path in 1972, married and later raised two daughters. In 1976, while living in Boston, I legally changed my name and to SatHanuman Singh Khalsa. In 1978-80, I attended Harvard University (JFK administration, US History, Religion). From 1976-1980 I managed a retail store in Cambridge.
In 1980, my family moved back to Altamonte Springs, Florida where we lived until 1991.
After 20 years, my wife and I separated and had an amicable divorce in May of 1992.
On June 14,1992, I married Amrit Kaur Khalsa, in Roswell, Georgia where we lived and worked for four years before again moving back home to New England.
I founded and managed a Natural Food brokerage company in 1986. Amrit Kaur joined me in 1990 and we worked together in the Natural Products industry for 17 years until moving out to Portland Oregon in 2005.
I was in NYC by coincidence on 9/10/2001 and was unable to leave the city until September 15th to return to Boston. My two employees and I watched the two aircraft crash into the Twin Towers and the buildings crash to the earth.
From 1996 until the fall of 2005 I was actively engaged in the Sikh community in Millis, Massachusetts and worked with other churches, synagogues and Interfaith groups to bring together more understanding and div...Expand for more
ersity after 9/11.
In September of 2005 after moving to Troutdale (a small bedroom diverse community) east of Portland, I began 6 years as America's 1st turbaned Sikh American Transportation Security Officer at Portland International Airport. In 2008, as a Lead Security Officer, I was appointed to the National Advisory Council in Arlington, Virginia where I served at TSA Hq for 2 years.
I retired in 2012 for one year and then was brought back to work for a national Natural Products brokerage company as a merchandiser and retail services specialist.
My wife is a National Brand Manager for the same company so again we are working together. We have four grandchildren who live in Eugene, Oregon.
I always miss New England but have one true satisfaction from my youth, I watched my Boston Red Sox win not one World Series Championship but (3)- 2004, 2007, 2013.
I volunteer as the Pacific NW Director of the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund to educate and bring other diverse faiths together in the Northwest and train Federal, State, and local Law Enforcement on Sikh cultural awareness.
