Sabrina's Story

My story. Well, that sounds too final, so how about my story so far? After graduation I got to play sister June in Gypsy at College of the Redwoods with Judy Turner acting the lead of Mama Rose. That was very fun! Did Humboldt for 2 quarters. Then decided I needed to try "real life" for awhile. Chip Thomas helped me get a job with him in SF with B of A. We had TONS of fun for two years, but I decided that was not the career for me. Next, Yuba College in Marysville, got certified as an Animal Health Technician and an AS in Biology. (If you are thinking by this time that I must have the most understanding and broke parents in the world, don't, student loans got me through, not that my parents were not very helpful and understanding.:) But then I decided I did not want to be an AHT, and went to SF State for a year, majoring in broadcast journalism/theatre. But that was not the career for me either, and since my boyfriend of the moment was going to Chico State University, I decided to go there (stupid reason), and I looked through the catalog to find something that I could graduate in in one year, (because, my goodness, don't you think it was time?) and decided that I could manage a Political Science degree and a paralegal certificate, but then I got involved with the Chico Community Legal Information Center, and started representing people in unemployment insurance appeals and worker's compensation hearings, and I liked that so I decided to stay an extra year there and direct the Worker's Rights Program, while I took the LSAT to get into law school, which I did and then I went to UC Davis Law School, and got a law degree. I LOVED law school. Being a lawyer has its ups and downs, but law school - well - we had a fabulous time. Then while I was waiting for the bar results, and before I started paying back the $30k in student loans, I decided to get more in debt and went to Europe for two months, which was where I was on the night of our 10- year class reunion - So I toasted the Class of 1978 in 1988 in a pub in London while drinking a "shandy." (lemonade and beer, yech!) Actually the entire pub toasted everyone in our class also (it was a VERY friendly crowd), from across the Atlantic. I came back and worked for the Sacramento City Attorney's Office for 5 years, with one major highlight - a 4 week trip to New Zealand, then decided to take a year off and go to Chile and Argentina and Guatemala and Costa Rica. Among other exciting adventures we backpacked in the Torres del Paine on the southern part of Chile, Patagonia, unforgettable...Expand for more
. adventure. Especially the 3 DAYS we spent in a 1 1/2 person tent during torrential rains and 40 mph winds where only one person could sit up at a time. Then I came back and got a job doing the legal part on disaster assistance loans for the SBA for the Northridge earthquake. Then I worked for a year and a half for the City of Rocklin City Attorney's Office (there were only two of us, the boss - Sabina and me, Sabrina and if you don't think that was confusing!) then Placer County Counsel's Office where I worked for 10 years. I got married to my soul mate, the best guy in the world, at 37, and we have been having a blast ever since (well, before, too.). We learned to sail in the British Virgin Islands in 2005, which was really fun, and returned there in 1/06 by ourselves, chartered a boat and sailed it, just the two of us. Then went back in December of 2007 and sailed in the Grenadines, even into the port where they filmed Pirates of the Caribbean. They still have the set up. A huge poster of Johnny Depp in the bathroom. Then we got more sailing certifications. Other highlights of our life so far include rafting the Colorado through the Grand Canyon for two weeks (You have GOT to do it, it was amazing!) Disney World , Key West, Kauai, Oahu, Maui, and Hawaii, the Big Island. In 2001 Rotary sent me and four other professionals to Provence for a month, all expenses paid (!) to learn how the law in France works, so I spoke lots of French, stayed with 5 different families of French Rotarians, drank LOTS of wine. It was amazing how much my French improved after the wine. It was an exhausting but phenomenal experience. We do not have any kids, and while that made me sad at first, I'm thinkin' now it's a good thing. We have our dog Kaweah still, although she is getting very old, 15, and Rosie my ex- racehorse thoroughbred that I bought on a credit card advance during my "study for the bar exam" frenzy 20 years ago. She's 23 years old now and just this morning she was tearing around a turn-out field like a three year old, bucking and kicking and running as fast as she could just for the joy of running. I decided to learn to play the violin four years ago, and I still sound horrific, but my teacher is nice about it so I persevere with the lessons, though I find it difficult to make myself practice. I retired in June, and I'm thinking of writing murder mysteries. Next year we are planning to kayak the Galapagos, ski Whistler/Blackcomb and bicycle Vietnam and Cambodia. I LOVE Bikram (hot) yoga. That's my life and story so far! Sabrina
