Salle's Story
When I graduated from Del Mar my life's ambition was to return as an English and Drama teacher. The road had a few strange bends and switchbacks, but I returned to Del Mar in 1989 as the Japanese teacher. And in 1990 and 1991 I also directed the All School and Senior plays. Okay, NEXT!
My first book of poetry was published in 2008 and I'm working on the story of my 5 1/2 years in Japan (1980-1985) from the point of view of then (I wrote a monthly newsletter while I was there) and now, using the newsletters as a frame to hold my memories and reflections. So my brother asks me, "Who would want to read a book about Japan by you?...Expand for more
" It's nice when you get support in your own nest. My answer: "Japanophiles and even people who like me!" A-HA!
My editing, writing and blogging business (Upstart Services) is doing well. I'm still working with refugees (since 1993 at the Immigrant Resettlement and Cultural Center as program manager for the education division) and tutoring kids again. Upstart Services requires a lot of running around networking for work. A busy life, but I'm so full of joy most of the time that my son -- a graphic designer in Albuquerque, New Mexico -- gets disgusted and calls me Pollyanna. That's okay, Pollyanna had a really nice life. :^*
