Sally's Story
Workplace
I retired from Cap. Hill in 1996. Started volunteering at a humane society which bought a kennel in 1999, was President and oversaw a 40 run kennel and was deep into dog rescues. It's a United Way Agency and I'm very proud that we are 100% volunteer. I put in seven days a week. April 2013 and am now V.P. and still enjoying rescuing, also into spay and neuter. We continue to make improvements to our facility and visiting us is like being with 'family.' Unfortunately health issues caused me to step back and resign from office and active dog rescuing in 2014, am now overseeing a large cat spay and neuter grant from home.
Early 60's lived in Chicago, then back to Indpls., Became very active in Marion County and state Young Republicans. Worked for Keith Bulen at republican Headquarters. In the late 60's Then Congressman Richard Roudebush invited me to work for him so I moved to Washington, D.C., I lived on Capitol Hill for a few years and in the late 70's moved to southern Maryland. where I am still. When Dick Roudebush left office I worked for Cong. El;wood Hillis (also 5th District) for a year. When William Cohen arrived from Maine in a black leather jacket on a motorcycle, I believe the youngest Congressman, I joined his staff immediately and worked for him until he retired as a Senator in 1998.
Married in 1971, Greg born in 1975, Sarah adopted in 1982. We had four girls who died, including twins, before they could come home from the hospital. Sarah is engaged. Greg has a 10 year old son, Zach..
Mom died of Alzheimers in 2010, Dad of a heart attack in 1971, My sister Dotti of pancreatic cancer in 1998.
We live in what was a rural area when we moved here in 1981. The road before you turned into our road was a dirt road. It is now five lanes up at the light. We have ten acres, creeks, ravines, a fox den, and a lake thanks to the beavers.
The day is gone when I raised pet chickens, turkeys, ducks and guinea hens. And had a huge garden. I read a lot. I like to visit wineries in the nearby states. I got my last two cats when I was on vacations, one in Asheville NC (a gray cat, Ashes), the other, Puddles, a three week old kitten we found in a puddle in a rain storm in Front Royal VA.
Things started going downhill in '13 when a sciatic nerve hit out of nowhere and I screamed all the way to the hospital. This was when I had a problem with oxycodone and sat in a chair like a zombie, unless I was falling out of it! I found a surgeon who took care of my back problem. I developed bad balance and fell several times breaking my nose, knocking out teeth, and damaging both shoulders. I recently had a hip replacement (2017) and am walking much better. I had a second knee replacement in June 2018. I am going to put off the shoulder replacements. My American Eskimo companion of 16 years died this summer. One of my chihuahuas has cancer. Not everything has been bad, though.. Worked all year on my daughter' Sarah's wedding on November 11 2017. and will post a picture of that and of my son, Greg, and his wife and son, Zach. For awhile there it was like having a job again (except I was pa...Expand for more
ying them!).
One time I told Sarah I wouldn't spend a penny on her wedding, and I was right. I spent thousands.
We're looking at cruising again. We used to have to drive to Miami (we're in Maryland) but a few years ago they opened up the Port of Baltimore to cruise lines. The downside is they don't go very many places.
I had a tia (mini stroke) a couple of years ago. This has me not driving much unfortunately. I have always enjoyed my solitary vacations, and love to drive. I've gone to New Orleans, Vermont, and a variety of places. I was in my car getting ready to pull out of a parking space when I had the tia and I realized how much damage I could have caused had it been two minutes later.
May 4, 2018. Today is my youngest daughter's birthday, She is 36. She's the one who got married in November. She teaches Special Ed ages 3 and 4.
My son works in Baltimore Social Services as an emergency foster child. care social worker.
The kids and I are very close, I take us all on a vacation each summer, has to be where we can drive to. We have gone from the Poconos, to the lower Outer Banks, to Canaan and Shenandoah Valleys. My husband is not a good vacationer so he has always stayed home with our animals.
I'm assuming we are having a reunion in 2020. I'm going to combine it with a driving vacation, cities East of the Mississippi, to music museums and baseball teams. This would be my husband and I. Cleveland offers The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (my daughter and I went there when it opened, had a great train trip there.) Has the Cleveland Indians, Detroit Tigers and Motown, St Louis Cardinals and jazz. , I think I have more fun planning a vacation than actually going on it. We have to go thru Nashville, So far we can't think of any reason to stop there, I'm going to have to hunt further.
Thanks to Covid our plans for our earlier trip did not happen. 2020 and 2021 have been challenging. However we were blessed to not have it touch our family.
Many changes here in the past six years. In the past two years I've had two heart attacks, Two TIAs. Several surgeries from falls. I'm my husband's caretaker. He developed Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinsons. My Eskimo Maggie, Chihuahuas Queenie and Sugar died in that time. Last year I adopted a one year old mini American Eskimo, and still have Pillie, a 17 year old Chihuahua. I named my new dog Ruthie after our classmate Ruth Davis and also Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
I experienced how people can do stupid things when they have heart attacks. I drug myself outside and filled the bird feeders, then drove myself to the hospital, and never thought to tell my family.
My daughter Sarah and James got a house two years ago. They moved in between their two sets of parents. We are 18 minutes away from her and always having emergencies. My husband has had two cardiac arrests thank God in hospitals. It was interesting to watch them working on him. So different from what we were taught in class.
Sarah was named teacher of the year.. She was also recognized as developing the best curriculum for teaching kids at home during Covid..
Happy Christmas to all.
