Life
Living near the beach in Galveston, TX. I'm a widowed Mother and Grandmother now. I paint, grow orchids and spend as much time as possible on the beaches. Would love to hear from classmates!!
On September 13th 2008 Hurricane Ike slammed into my lovely little Island. It will be years before we are back to any thing close to normal. Just because we are no longer in the news does not mean that things are progressing. Imagine your daily life....the dry cleaner, the Library, maybe Blockbuster and a quick trip to have the car washed or the dog groomed. Not here. None of these businesses exist anymore. The only business we have are the ones along the Seawall that were undamaged. Walmart, Kroger Grocery store, a handful of hotels, and bars and restaurants. Our major employer....a teaching Hospital associated with the University of Texas has laid off over 1/3 of all employees, including Doctors and Nurses and they have in essence shut down the emergency room all together. ave to the mainland for anything from servicing our cars, dentists or opticians to heath care and shoe stores. There are no business, so no work.
FEMA has told our Governor that since Texas has a surplus of revenue that the Federal Government will not be helping anywhere near the levels seen in New Orleans and they are true to their work. Over 350,000 claims have been filed, more than half have been denied up front and less than 7% have been processed. They ended hotel vouchers two weeks ago and shut the shelter last week. Over 70% percent of all homes and businesses are damaged to the point of being unusable. There is no place to live.
winter is fast approaching and people are still living in tents in their front lawns. With no insurance money being paid yet, a mortgage on a home that is unlivable and no job.....most people can't afford to find a rental property on the mainland. So....just in case you were thinking that things must be getting back to normal here.....they are not,
