Sally's Story

Graduated with the idea that you were supposed to get married and have kids - never occurred to me you could actually have a career. Happily think I was one of the last from that era. Got a BS in Home Economics with certificate to teach children and adult home extension (never took it in high school). Attended University of Nebraska - Lincoln and married in Junior year, lasted 18 years and had three children. Lived in Lincoln, NE where I had The Doll House (featured in Redbook magazine in the 70s as part of Young Mother's series). It was a retail store (not doll house or miniatures, but regular play dolls for children with clothes we designed for them, much like today's American Girl. Also designed and sewed private school doll uniforms for toy store owned by Meredith Brokaw, Tom's wife, in New York) and I had it with a partner for 9 years. Also kept busy as County and State Fair food judge for many years and was recipe contest judge for local newspaper's annual contest. Also stayed active by working with Friendship Force both taking and leading trips to homes in Germany and Sweden and chairing Mayor's Committee for International Friendship by coordinating professional visits for guests of the US Embassy who wanted to see Nebraska's agriculture, visit our unicameral government, tour our University Ag Department or other unique Nebraska resource. Moved to Silicon Valley in California after death of my mother in 1987 and have been here ever since. Remarried in...Expand for more
1993 and found the love of my life (and a never-married bachelor to boot! Why was I in such a hurry the first time?). Got a master's degree in Health Services Administration and have been working in related fields ever since - physical therapy office management and business development, opening workers' compensation clinics and for the last 14 years of my career, in management for a large multi-specialty medical group where I ran the education programs, libraries and school nutrition programs. My husband Steve motivates me to stay fit. By profession he was an RN with a Master's in Exercise Physiology whose passion remains triathlons. It was a proud moment when Leah, then just 10 weeks old, and I walked across the finish line of the Ironman in Hawaii with him, a courtesy they extend to the participants' families. . Today I'm retired, moved outside Silicon Valley to a country bedroom community just south of San Jose. For the last 10 years we've been raising our granddaughter, Leah. We became her full time guardians when she was 7 weeks old and in 2016 began the process of adopting her. She keeps us busy but I'm still able to devote lots of time to my passion, horses and our two miniature Australian Labradoodles. I love to train and have been studying animals and natural horsemanship for many years. I keep my creative side busy with decorating projects and using old things to make something new. My home economics education was a good investment. Life is good.
