Salvatore's Story
I was born in the last half of the previous century on the island of Manhattan in the state of New York. Within a few years of my birth we moved to northern New Jersey to live with my aging grandmother and downs syndrome aunt were me and my two brothers I attended school. I was one of the first of the TV generation and it did have an effect on me. I watched shows like Bozo, Magic Land of Alakazam, Ed Sullivan Show, Laugh In, and Red Skeleton. I guess that¿s where my interest in magic and clowning started. In my late teens I started reading books on magic and magicians peaking my interest on the subject. I purchased a few effects and started practicing. Reading the instructions I found out an important fact magic effect instructions are written for right handed people and I¿m left handed so I have to do things a little differently to achieve the same results. Each effect also comes with a story line but either they were too old or weren¿t my style so I started making up my own. I put the magic on the back burner for a few years when I enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. After technical school I restarted doing magic again but only for my own enjoyment. I was on weekend duty at my first duty station reading a book on magic when a general came through for a tour of the facilities. He saw me reading the book and ¿requested¿ that I do an effect for him and not disappear....Expand for more
I don¿t remember the effect I did or the generals name any more but he gave me my start in doing public performances. The first few years I made most of my props and the money I received for doing the shows was saved up to purchase props to improve the show, which I still do. While in the Air Force I was stationed in Europe and South America which gave me a unique chance to do magic in numerous countries for people of all nationalities and all types of venues. While stationed in Panama a friend ask me if I would do his sons birthday party as a clown I took on the challenge and Screwie the clown was born. After 20 years (13 ½ stationed overseas) in the Air Force I retired. I¿ve settled in Texas midway between San Antonio and Austin. I still travel doing shows. The types of shows have grown but the smiles and laughter is still the same as it was the day I started. I thank God every day for giving me the talent and ability to make people smile and laugh.
For those men in my graduating class the fist public magic effect I ever did was when you gave my the razor to shave my sideburns. Oh there was a blade when you gave it to me but buy the time I was escorted to the locker room sink it the blade was out the window and I couldn't shave them. To bad I couldn't take a bow but I did have a good laugh after as each of you blamed each other for not having checked for a blade.
