Sam's Story

Life I am currently an endodontist living and practicing in Mesa, Arizona. My wife, Sue, and I recently moved to the Valley of the Sun from El Paso, Texas, where I was last assigned with the Army (Fort Bliss) before my retirement from the service in February, 2004. Sue and I have been married for 24 years. We were married in San Francisco while I was in dental school at UCSF. We met earlier while we were both attending the University of San Francisco. We have three children: Sondra (23, senior at Univ of San Francisco); Shawna (22, junior at New Mexico State Univ); and, Sam (20, sophomore at Univ of Texas). The Army ROTC scholarship that I received out of high school led to my 23-year career in the Army Dental Corps (I achieved the rank of Colonel back in 1999). While I was on active duty, we lived in Germany twice, Texas twice, Washington, Georgia and even California (Fort Irwin, in the Mojave Desert, 88-91). My parents still live in Novato. My brother, Fred (NHS 74), is a veterinarian with a PhD in epidemiology and works for the CDC. He and his family live in Atlanta. My youngest brother, Tony (SMHS 79), is a pharmacist and heads up the pharmacy department at the Kaiser hospital in Roseville. He and his family live in Shingle Springs in the foothills east of Sacramento. If anyone would like to contact me, my email address is "sangulo at elpasonet dot net". I would love to hear from you. Sue and I really enjoyed our class 30-year reunion back in 2003 and we hope to see you at the next one. College Attended USF 73-77, graduating Summa Cum Laude with BS in Biology. Enjoyed it. Lived in dorms all 4 years. It was a small close-knit community. Met my wife (Sue Espinoza) there as freshmen and asked her out fall semester of sophomore year. She was a cheerleader at the time. Had a bunch of good guys on one wing of our floor, 2P (2nd Floor, Phelan Hall). Changed assigned roommate during Welcome Week of first year and kept same roommate (Barry Shiller) for three years, until he and I became RAs as seniors. Great guy! He eventually was the Best Man at my wedding. Enjoyed campus life: playing intramural sports, working for Public Safety & Office of Residence Life, supporting nationally-ranked basketball & soccer teams (doing Public Address for soccer & baseball teams), wri...Expand for more
ting for campus paper, exploring City (Red Boy Pizza, concerts at Winterland, sourdough bread, Giants at Candlestick, Juanito's Burritos, Tower Records, Raskin & Flakker's, NBA champ Warriors, Muni bus rides, Cliff House, etc.), palling around with guys on floor, attending classes with accesible profs... Heck, I even liked the food in the dining commons. Proceeded to Dental School across Golden Gate Park at UCSF 77-81. Enjoyed that, too. Actually lived in dorms at USF one more year during start of dental school. Moved into top floor 2-BR apartment with brother (Fred) & his buddy (Jim Sturla)for sophomore year. Great location on 10th Ave between Judah & Kirkland, with view of distant ocean. The three of us paid $315/mo, total! (Fred paid the least because he slept at end of living room.) Stayed there until graduation. Had law student as roommate for first half of junior year before I got married. The UCSF staff did a pretty good job of supporting the students through a relatively difficult curriculum. But, what really made the whole experience bearable was the individual makeup of our class. We were pretty close, particularly the fourth of the class that shared the "Red Room" pre-clinical lab. Made some good friends there. Extra-curricular activities helped, too (playing city league softball, getting student season tickets to SF symphony, taking ski trips to Tahoe, going to concerts & Giants games, and, well, good ol' partying). Graduated on Father's Day, 1981, in 100+ degree heat at Marin Civic Center. Very special day. Dad participated in ceremony by "hooding" me. That was my own first Father's Day. Sondra was only 11 months old (and Sue was less than 3 weeks away from delivering Shawna). Returned to college 14 years later while doing Endodontic Residency with Army at Fort Gordon, Georgia. Concurrent with that program, I attended the Medical College of Georgia 95-97 and graduated with an MS in Oral Biology. Of course, it was a much different experience than the earlier schools. Essentially, it was a graduate study thesis program combined with the existing upper division classes we were already taking for the residency. Couldn't have done it without Sue's support and a great advisor, Dr. David Pashley. Never thought of myself as a researcher, but he brought out the best in me.
