Sam's Story
Life
Life after Bennett...whoa! Immediately went on to Buff State graduating in '71 when I began my teaching career in the Buffalo Public Schools. While teaching, I also attended Buff State again graduating in '76 with my masters degree. In '72, I entered into what I thought to be a wonderful marriage, but soon Sherry felt she needed to explore life a bit more. Four-plus years later, we chose to go our separate ways.
My way was to live out a dream by moving to California. Unfortunately, my departure was delayed a bit by the infamous Blizzard of '77. A week later, I was on the road toward a new life taking my Buffalo memories into a much warmer climate. Worked a bit here and there until a job offer came in from San Diego. Lived there a year...quite a momentous year as I searched for the "real" me. I came out to the world and never looked back. In 1980 I was chairing a meeting of the March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights in Los Angeles as I helped organize a statewide conference when my soulmate was suddenly before my eyes. Two months later, we had a garden wedding and have been together ever since, recently celebrating our 26th anniversary.
Tedd and I entered show business...Tedd in the spotlight as singer, actor, and comic (similar personality to my ex-wife, but with different plumbing). Show biz took us to New York City, Pocono Mountains, Detroit, back to Los Angeles, Las Vegas, back to New York City, San Francisco, and now in Desert Hot Springs, just north of Palm Springs, California. ing Tedd's manager and personal secretary, I held jobs in both teaching and the travel industry. Currently, I am teaching Language Arts, Theatre Arts, Yearbook, and Student Government and Leadership at a very rural high school located on the west shores of the Salton Sea. The kids are wonderful which makes the 130 miles I drive each day worthwhile.
Another love of mine is the travel industry, with particular emphasis toward airlines. Have worked for Continental (LAX), British Airways (NYC), Pan Am (JFK), United (SFO), and currently USAirways (PSP) on a part time basis. In Palm Springs, we do everything short of flying the aircraft...we check you and your luggage in at the ticket counter, shlep your luggage on and off the aircraft, and then pushback your aircraft to an area where the pilot can then drive to the runway. Never ever thought I would be doing the tasks I am doing...and loving every bit of it.
Though I love teaching, I am quite eager to begin the planning of my eventual retirement. However, I do not think that will become a reality for another 5 years. I have led a diverse life and have no regrets as I love to experience and explore exciting environments while meeting new people, and in turn, making several longterm friends along the way.
Would love to attend a Bennett High reunion, so if anyone knows of one being planned, definitely let me know. If you remember me and want to reconnect, simply contact me here at classmates or facebook.
Best always!
