Sam and Jill's Story
2011: We are so lucky. Who'd have thought we'd be together at 66 years old? Going steady, almost 50 years ago at Manatee High, I don't think we KNEW anyone that old.
But each year gets better and better. We now have settled down to a life of spending 6 months at our condo downtown on the Manatee River and 6 months in our wonderful cozy log cabin on a tiny lake in Hendersonville, NC.
We have a constant stream of family and friends visiting. Almost 40 came up to the cabin last summer. We love seeing everyone and showing them around Western NC.
While in Bradenton we volunteer for local non-profits like Realize Bradenton, an organization that is actually helping downtown Bradenton achieve its rightful place as one of the most unique and desirable destinations for arts, culture and heritage in Florida. Jill is treasurer in the American Association of University Women as well as our condo owner's board. She also is active in her sorority Chi Omega.
Up at the cabin, we totally relax and watch the ducks, geese, squirrels, chipmunks, bream, bass, carp and tons of songbirds as well as white turkeys, roosters and hens our neighbor keeps. It's quite a cacophonous menagerie in the mornings.
As our children grow up (it's astounding to think they are now over two to three times older than we were at Manatee) our family grows....Expand for more
Jill's son, Darren and wife Pat now have a 3 year old son Davis and 1 year old daughter Kate. They just came up to the cabin for the first time and are wonderful, model children.
Jill's daughter Tracey and her husband Tim are buying their first house outside of Atlanta and continue to be senior chefs in the Marriott system.
My daughter, Annie and her partner Betsy are bringing their twins, Cooper and Sadie, now 7, from San Francisco to the cabin for the first time this summer. We can't wait! We've even put their names on our canoe. (Of course we have Davis and Kate's on the other side).
My other daughter Shawna has continued to climb the corporate ladder at the Sierra Club headquarters. She lives at the foot of Coit tower in downtown San Francisco. We are very proud of her and hope to see her on the East Coast on a future business trip.
As many of you know, we were "volunteered" to plan the Class of '63's Fiftieth Reunion in 2013 and hope to launch into it this summer, although just matching the great job Susan Frohock Layman did for our 45th will be a steep challenge.
We honestly love reconnecting and hearing from classmates and business associates from the last half a century. Any friends reading this from any of our schools or businesses are welcome to come and visit!
Have a great year.
