Sam's Story

Life I live in North Raleigh near Falls Lake. I've worked in Research Triangle Park ever since coming to this area in 1984. . I have three children. They are Rachel, Will and Claire. Rachel graduated from McDaniel College (formerly Western Maryland College) in 2018, Will is a senior at Gettysburg College, and Claire is a combat medic in the US Army. Over the years I have continued to run. I was on the track team at Western Maryland College (which changed its name to McDaniel College over 20 years ago) and ran all of the events that I did in high school. I have continued to run ever since and have competed in triathlons for the past 30 years. Workplace After SHHS, I graduated from Western Maryland College in 1980 with a BA degree in Biology. I received an A.D. Williams pre-doctoral fellowship from the state of Virginia which allowed me to pursue my graduate education. In 1984 I received a PhD in Biochemistry and Biophysics from the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University. From that point I accepted a post doctoral fellowship with the Wellcome Research Laboratories in Research Triangle Park in North Carolina and have been here in North Carolina ever since. I have worked almost exclusively on infectious diseases throughout my research career and focused on HIV and hepatitis C drug discovery and development. In 1993 I started a biotechnology company, Trimeris Inc, that focused on creating novel therapeutics to treat individuals who are infected with HIV. Eventually I became the global head of development for a collaboration between Trimeris and Hoffmann LaRoche. In 2003 the collaboration led to the worldwide approval of Fuzeon (a drug my research team discovered at Trimeris) for the treatment of HIV infec...Expand for more
tion. At the peak of its worldwide sales approximately 3% of HIV positive patients in North America and Western Europe who were on therapy took Fuzeon to control the progression of their disease. In 1997 I took Trimeris public by performing an IPO and registering the stock on the NASDAQ. TRMS was the call sign. Eventually the market capitalization of the company reached 3.5 billion US dollars during my tenure as the Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs. In 2013, almost 12 years after my departure from the company, the remaining product revenue stream was sold to Synageva and the company's presence in North Carolina was dissolved. Recently I have started a new venture, Asklepios BioPharmaceutical Inc. The company is dedicated to treating rare monogenic diseases using whole gene transfer with engineered adeno-associated virus. We started with seven people in 2017 and now as of 2021 we have over 200 employees at four locations in the US and Europe. We were purchased by Bayer Pharma AG in December 2020 for 4 billion dollars and are now a wholly owned subsidiary of Bayer. Currently I am the VP of Therapeutics and concentrate my attention on neuro muscular disease indications. I serve as a reviewer for the NIH in the areas of infectious diseases and pharmacology, I review and edit articles for publication for several major research periodicals, and I serve as a board member and scientific advisor to a number of biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. In 2016 I joined the Board of Trustees for my alma mater. Over the years I've kept in touch with Mark Brugh, Dave Haught, Brad McCullough and Jeff Kercheval. My life would never have been the same had I not known all of them. I can honestly say hometown friends are the best.
