Samantha's Story

I grew up on the far west side of Chicago (a block from Oak Park) and lived with my parents, my 2 older brothers and younger sister. Living in the Austin community was so great. I played on the Columbus Park tennis team for many years as a kid. My friends in the community and I spent many hours hanging out at the park, riding our bikes, playing tennis and playing harmless pranks on our neighbors and each other. I thank God for blessing me with such a great childhood which was not perfect by any means but compared to what some young people have to deal with today I feel pretty fortunate. I attended and graduated from Walt Disney Magnet School in 1980 and was strongly encouraged to attend Whitney Young High School. Several of my friends were attending Senn HS and if my friends were going then of course I had to attend Senn as well. I attended Senn HS from 1980 to 1984. I had a great time at Senn which is probably why I didn't do as well as I could've academically because I was so busy with my social agenda. While at Senn I participated in cheerleading, track, the African American Club, Jewelry Making Club, tried out for the girls basketball team and had a short stint on the gymnastic team. My fondest memories at Senn were of the Homecoming activities, the International Festival Days and my graduation day. My long time High school sweetheart was Andre Lewis Bey who attended Senn for 1 day and then transferred and graduated from Sullivan High School. I took a lot of flack for having a boyfriend who attended our all time rival high school. Anyway, my hang out buddies at Senn were of course the girls from the cheerleading team as well as Nannette and Annette Hall, Franzetta Howard, Dwayne (Gucci)Douglas, Kelly, Edward and Eugene Rose, Percy, Mattie Bonner, James Ross, John Goss and many others. My favorite teacher was Mr. Brown who taught auto shop. In 1984 prior to graduation I joined the US Army Reserve to attend nursing school. While in a medic training school I met my husband Ken in 1985 and we were married in the fall of 1986. We have 3 young adult children: Ashley 22, Bianca 19 and KJ 16. My daughters are students at Andrews University in Berrien Springs MI and my son attends a private christian school here in Michigan. As a family we have faced many struggles but by the grace of God were are all still extremely blessed. On Aug 3rd of this year my husband and I will celebrate 23 years of marriage. After I got married in 1986 I attended many colleges taking several classes at a time while raising my young family. I graduated from nursing school in 1995. In 1999 I earned my degree in nursing. During my nursing career I have worked at hospitals, nursing homes, home care nursing, hospice, case management, pediatric nursing and most recently I managed a large Long Term Care facility. My favorite nursing job was my pediatric home care case management position. In this position I spent all day with children who were medically complex and required skilled nursing care in most cases 24 hours a day. I would provide nursing care as well as read books to the kids, go on walks, watch tv and it pretty much was like a nanny job. tally and physically for my peds job. About a month ago I opened an upscale children's resale clothing shop called Trendy Kidz and Teenz Clothing. The store specializes in selling like new and new brand named children's clothing from infant to teen sizes. The clothes are sold 50-75% below retail cost to make the clothing affordable for families. The store's decor is bright, kid friendly and fun. Our store has a play area with toys and a flat screen tv to keep kids busy while their parents shop. Here in southwestern Michigan the economy is really struggling. This store is more like an outreach effort. Don't get me wrong, I definitely want to make money but my main goal is to provide families in our community with exceptional clothing at an exceptional price. My family members(especially my mom) are strong supporters of my little effort. I am still doing nursing case management but at the end of July I will be working full time at my store. My husband and I also have another small business in which our kids plus several employees are very busy with at this time. My mom currently lives in downtown Chicago. My dad died about 15 years ago from a stroke and my oldest brother Eddie died about 6 years ago. My brother Jimmy lives in a south suburb of Chicago and my sister Niki just moved to Fort Jackson, SC were I was stationed for basic training many moons ago. I come into Chicago maybe once every 2-3months. I was in Chicago for the graduation of my niece from Loyola University just recently. Whenever I'm on the north side I try to drive by Senn to see whats changed and what has remained the same. Attending Senn prepared me for what the real world was going to be like. The diversity in cultures, personalities and personal opinions taught me tolerance and acceptance of others. When other people were trying to figure out how to relate this person and that person I was like, "been there, done that what is the problem". In 2010 I will be returning to school to complete my masters degree in nursing, what I will do with that degree who knows. My son KJ will be graduating from HS in 2010 so I'm planning a family vacation for some time after his graduation. I have been so busy that I have not done any gardening this year which has resulted in my back yard looking like a desperate landscape candidate. Thank the Lord that we have a 8 foot privacy fence which protects the neighbor from my neglected backyard but doesn't do a thing about us seeing the nightmare behind the house. We have been actually looking at buying another house so hopefully by the fall we will have a better ideal on where we will live. I was planning on a tour of the light houses of Michigan to start this weekend. But as luck has it my husband has possibly torn his stupid ACL so there goes my light house tour. The crazy part about his knee injury is that I torn my ACL and MCL about 3 months ago. What a crazy coincidence. I honestly think he did it on purpose to avoid going on this fabulous tour. What do you think? Just kidding. I lost touch with most of my high school friends many years ago. I would love to hear from you guys. Send me an email or drop me a line on classmates.
