Samuel's Story
Life
Attended Marshall College and received a commission in US ARMY. Married in senior year of college and entered service in Feb 58. Stationed in GA, Korea, MI, MD, Germany, MD, VN-68-69 with 101st Airborne Division, and retired from Ft Bragg, NC. During this time had 4 boys and 1 girl. Retired from Army as Lieutenant Colonel in 79 and returned to Huntington. Wife killed in auto accident in early 80 and was widow for 8 years then remarried. In 83 started teaching Jr ROTC in Huntington HS and retired in 95. Now totally retired and in summer of 2003 moved to Proctorville,OH in southern Ohio just across he Ohio River from Huntington..
College
Started in Aug of 53 after graduating from Webster Springs HS in Webster Springs, WV. WSH was a small old school with a very limited offering but a good football team. I had no idea what I would major in or what I wanted to take when I started Marshall College (now University) in fall of 53 in Huntington , WV. Then all qualified males had to take Military Science 1 so i took it. Found out I liked it and was the student assistant in the supply room for 3 years. nd it was a nice move since it gave me over 3 years of service when I went on active duty and also for my military retirement 21 1/2 years later. I married Dorothy Carey in Feb 58 while a senior. I did not join a Greek Fraternity but did join the Geography society and the Scabbard and Blade honorary of ROTC. I missed a lot in college because of lack of money and time but feel it gave me a good start to my Military career in the Army Ordnance Corps.
After retirement in 79 we returned to Huntington , WV. I worked at Goodwill for aq year and in 83 I helped in the start of the Junior Reserve Officers Course in Huntington High School and retired from there in 95. I have been fully retired and now live in Proctorville , OH just across the Ohio River from Huntington and almost in site of KY
about 10 miles down the river. Judy and I enjoy the area, but like most, wish we had more money to help enjoy it more. Love to travel but had bad wreck about 5 years ago and cannot drive long distances now so changing to flying more to go places. Hope to get back to Webster Springs and the Bergoo area more often. Lots of good people there and I love the area. SAM
