Sandra's Story

For those of you who knew me in high school, yes, I am still the same curious, winsome, tenacious person - only now, tempered with the love of Christ. He changed my life many years ago and saved me from self destruction. I was dating Larry Mahon (class of '66) when I graduated in '66. I pursued him relentlessly (I think it was the '68 Ford Mustang I bought that finally snagged him) and in the summer of '68 he asked me to marry him. We were married in December of that year. Larry began his career with Southern Pacific RR in '66. He was a trainee with the company while attending college. In 1970 he went to work for SP full-time. That decision gave us the opportunity to live many places in the states of CA and TX, with one stint in CO. In 1995 Larry took a new job with AMTRAK -we moved back to CA. Then is 2000 he went to work for Balfour Beatty, a company headquartered in England. In 2001 the company moved him to SoCal. We settled in Huntington Beach. Children: our first child, Russel, was born in Bakersfield 1970. He married his college sweetheart, Sally, in 1995 and they currently live in Houston where Russel is a grammar school music teacher. Sally works at St. Cuthberts as Lay Ministry Coordinator. The have two children, Kelton 12 and Lillian 9. Our daughter was born in Stockton in 1972. She met John when we moved to the small town of Dalhart, TX. They fell in love and married in 1995. John is a truck driver for his own company and he also partners with his dad in a cattle business. Jeni is a RN at the local hospital. They have two children, Ethan 12 and Ryan 9. Grandchildren: If you remember both Larry and I were musicians. I was nominal and Larry was fantastic. Our two oldest grandsons have inherited musical talent and Kelton is a great percussionist (like his dad) and Ethan plays a mean trombone and likes to compose. Kelton also takes after his grandpa and excels in baseball and other sports. Both our younger grandchildren are interested in animals. Ryan shows rabbits at the stock shows and Lillian has fish,a turtle, and a bird - the flying squirrel passed in the summer. Will we see a veterinarian in the future? ved us so much, I gave up my career in banking to be his wife and mother of our children. During our marriage we have lived in 12 cities and made 23 moves in and out of houses. I worked for a couple years when our kids were young and then I did small part-time jobs while the kids were in grammar school. During their teen years I was involved in volunteer work at the high school. Then in 1988 both kids left home - one for college and the other to Europe as an exchange student. I went back to work and held several diverse jobs as we moved around. A list of my work privileges: teller, NCR operator, vault teller, optician asst., lens lab manager, sales rep, church secretary, secretary for a windshield/vinyl repair shop, library assistant at a middle school, office manager for a crop dusting service, State Farm secretary, asst. director at a prayer center, front office at a doctor's office, HR asst. at a church, secretary at a church, and currently I volunteer at our local church as Treasurer. Our lives have been shaped in ways that we never dreamed of as a newly married couple. In 1996 we asked my folks to move in with us as my dad's health was poor. He passed in 1999 and of course, we kept my mother in the home with us. When we moved to Huntington Beach we also bought a retirement home in Tehachapi. We picked Tehachapi as we both have lots of family in the Bakersfield/Tehachapi area. In 2003 we sold that home to build a larger home in Tehachapi as we invited my mom's twin sister to move in with us. When the housing market began to fall in 2008 we decided holding two houses was not a good idea, so we sold the Huntington Beach house. Larry was planning to retire in the near future. My mom, aunt, and I moved into the Tehachapi house and Larry found a place in HB to rent for a time. As of this writing, Larry and I have agreed, it is not time for him to retire yet. So, I live in Tehachapi, Larry in Huntington Beach and we have a honeymoon every weekend. Oh, it also gives me time to use my Disneyland pass when I am down with him. We have been blessed over and over in our marriage and we give our Lord all the credit for what we have and who we are.
