Sandra's Story

I married Ron Rakin after school. We have 4 children, 3 girls and one boy. I was a stay at home Mom until I needed adult company and got a part time job working in a medical office. I had no idea that I had found my true calling. I worked at an Urgent Care Center and 20 years later I was still there. I became a medical assistant and then took over in an administrative capacity. I loved every minute of it. In 1991 Ron was hit by a Long Island Railroad train and suffered traumatic brain injury. astern Seaboard going to different Hospitals trying to get help for Ron. The kids were there every step of the way and I think it made us a stronger family. The people in the community and Ron's work all rallied around us. My job was so supportive, giving me all the time I needed to do what I had to do. We couldn't have done it without all those wonderful people. I still live on Long Island with 3 of my children. My oldest daughter even made me a Grandma 6 years ago. My Grandson Tyler is such a joy. He keeps me on my toes. Times are rough, but we have each other. I've been blessed with my children who are my friends as well as my kids.
