Sandra's Story
Well, this is my second attempt at this, so we'll see if I am more successful this time. My years at Durham High and the friendship I made have taken on a special meaning as 2021 begins. For me, 2020 reinforced the fragility of life, the gift of connection, and the importance of acknowledging and thanking those who have shared in this journey. Since graduation, I've experienced profound joy, sadness, and gifts beyond measure, personally and professionally. Discovering the value of reading, as well as the fact that I had unidentified reading problems of my own, led me, in 1985 to start an educational firm, Reading Matters-SCM, Inc. Although, I officially retired and closed the doors in 2017, I continue to consult with schools, non-profit agencies, and most importantly, instruct my last two students, both of whom have inspired me by the way they have navigated their own learning challenges. ts as they have become empowered by their own journey into reading and critical thinking.
In 2008, I remarried, and what a joy that has been! Not only did I find a wonderfully loving,, kind, and patient man, I've also been introduced to and developed a love for boating. My family has expanded to include a dear stepson and his family, as well as a beautiful stepdaughter and her family. Our grandchildren keep us engaged, entertained, and extraordinarily busy--at least until COVID. Thank goodness for ZOOM! I am living in the Northern Neck of Virginia, in the little village of Weems. Six a.m. every morning, I watch the deadrise boats go out to harvest oysters and soak up the magnificent sunrises. Needless to say, I am filled with gratitude for the present, but also for the past and for those of you (you know who you are) who have so enriched my life. I am still trying to track down some long-lost friends, but that will be my challenge for 2021. I am sending each of you who may read this, a sincere wish that you and your family stay safe and healthy and that you have a year filled with joy, peace, and grace.
