Sandra's Story
I have been living in Ventura, California since 1966, and really like the weather, climate and scenery. I have four beautiful grandchildren, ages 15 mo., 4, 6 and 8. I have been babysitting and spending lots of time with the older two who live here, and I fly to Norolk, VA. to spend time with the younger two, and they fly here to visit. So I have really been enjoying being a grandmother.
I worked as an admin. assistant for civil service, the County of Ventura, then in private industry here in Ventura County for about 40 years.
When my family and I visit Mobile, we have always stayed on Dauphin Island with my mother-in-law. The drive to Dauphin Isl. is especially beautiful near the bridge viewing the water and wildlife. We drive into Mobile and visit my cousins, and aunts.
I have lots of good memories of growing up in Mobile. I went to Mertz grammar school, living in the rural part of Mobile. My family and I moved into town near the Loop area when I was 12, and I attended Barton Academy. I remember the nice classmates and friends at Barton. Then I attended Murphy, and was in Phi Theta Gamma sorority. Still remember ...Expand for more
those happy years and nice friends. I met Joe McGee, my husband, who was in Phi Sigma Chi.
I was in the CORE program in my senior year at Murphy and worked afternoons at Merchants Nat'l. Bank. Joe and I got married the summer I graduated. We spent two years at Auburn University, where I worked as a secretary in the Education Dept., and took a few classes. After Joe got an Elec. Engineering degree, we moved to Panama City, FL. He worked for the Navy Mine Defense Lab. I had both our daughters there. After a few years, Joe's job took us to Kailua, Oahu, HI for one year, then to Ventura, CA. Joe passed away in 1976.
When we come to Mobile, we always have to go to Morrisons Cafeteria. Since childhood, my family has enjoyed their good food and family atmophere. One summer, in 1961, in between quarters from school, I worked for the Mobile Chamber of Commerce downtown. Our office breaks were spent at the old Morrisons across the street
I have lots of memories of happy times with friends in school and growig up in Mobile.
I'm sure we all have memories of happy days with our families, and all our friends!
