Sandy's Story
Life
Retired (early buyout) from the IRS as a Tax Specialist Manager in 1997 with 25 yrs service. EJ (now married 44 yrs) is also retired - from the Post Office and receives VA disability for wounds suffered in Vietnam during TET 1968 where he served with the 101st ABN. Not a good year as I look back. We only made it because we were young, very naive, and saw a lot of John Wayne movies in our youth. I would hate to go thru it again. Two daughters, Amy, 34, a surgical BSN, married to a retired Master Sgt (USAF) who now is a Program Manager with a major aircraft co. They have three little boys, 11, 8, and 7. They live about two miles from us and love having retired grandparents. Unfortunately, we lost Angie, 30, to an accidental prescription drug overdose in March, 2007. It was, beyond a doubt, the hardest time we've ever been through. So love those close to you often. In April, 2007 I suffered a TIA (mini stroke) with no residual damage. Doctors...Expand for more
believe it was due to the stress of Angie's unexpected death. In June, 2007, my mom, 92, passed away in CA from old age. My dad, Sam, passed away in l992. I was so fortunate to have been with each of them in their last days. I never wanted to be an "orphan" and I miss them every day. On a more positive note, I'm so glad we waited 10 yrs to embark on parenting! It gave us our 20s and now our 50s and 60s. Life is easy and good. EJ fishes and I redecorate our home. I try to meet my siblings (there are seven of us, all in CA but me) once every couple of years in Maui. It's great to be a slug, dabble in flowers, lunch with the wives of other vets, watch Lifetime TV all day, and generally do anything (and sometimes nothing) I want to - retirement is the best part of life. We couldn't have planned it this way even if we had tried. We are so fortunate to still have some youth left (damn little) and a very comfortable life. And we plan to enjoy each day!
