Sandra's Story

Life After graduating from FSU (go Marching Chiefs!!) in 1978 with a degree in Mass Communications, I moved to my parents house, then in Mississippi, and "mass communicated" over a hotel switchboard. After 2 years in MS I moved to Minnesota. I figured it couldn't be all that bad, so many people lived there, right? And what about Mary Tyler Moore? Let me tell you, it is all a trick. Living on the frozen tundra is COLD. I ended up an attorney, much to my surprise, but I'm not currently practicing. I found out that I can actually sing (I know, you don't believe me) and I love doing musical community theater. I have accumulated a few things along the way, including fibromyalgia (I wouldn't recommend it) and more wisdom than anybody probably anticipated, and a wonderful cat. I'd describe myself as spiritual, but not necessarily religious (but I was inadvertantly blessed by the Pope, write and ask me about it). I really want to connect with my old friends and find out where your life journey has taken you. Believe me, I've gone up and down the mountains and on and off the track more than once. I'm on Facebook (occasionally). I'd love to hear from you, wherever you live. For those who remember, my baby brother is now 41 years old and living in Portugal, heading up a Montessori school there, they moved him over there. I miss him a lot but with this pandemic, I think Portugal is safer than here. My little sister, Patty is married and has a 13 year old son!!! She lives in Blaine, MN. Daddy died in 1993, and Mom moved back to Wisconsin where she grew up (about 4 hours from here). My older sister lives in Gardiner, New York working as a librarian at University of New York in New Paltz. I moved up here to nowhere WI to care for my Mom and did so for 13 years. She has now gone into assisted living near my little sister in Blaine, MN. I am currently deciding where to move, has to be warmer!! The cold really hurts my fibromyalgia. It's really hard when you can't travel anywhere to check out a place. I'm looking at places I've never been to so it is difficult to make a decision. I have been married twice and am currently on my own with my kitty. Any suggestions are welcome. I'm looking for warmer, not too humid and a place that has MMJ to help my fibromyalgia constant pain. Of course, it has to be affordable (otherwise I'd be in San Diego right now) While I no longer have any puppies (Ridgebacks), I am a very devoted kitty-mommy! I begin again to begin again -- Remember: Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons, For Thou Art Crunchy and Good With Ketchup (I also like Renaissance Festivals and have costumes, I'm a "playtron") Oh, and since I rarely do anything exactly as instructed, you'll find lots of life stuff in my other bios, especially school and college - they all kind of merge together. School I started out at Little Island Playhouse on Key Biscayne, FL, (and flunked connect the numbers, because it was actually the dots they wanted connected, not the numbers). I went to Key Biscayne Elementary through 4th grade, then moved to Tallahassee. I went to Chaires Elementary School (after a HUGE culture shock), Cobb Junior High and Leon High School. My biggest love was band (sorry Jerry). I play clarinet (not very well anymore) and was one hell of a marcher!! I was lucky enough to have an incredible band director, Mr. Lewis Jones, who has shaped my life in so many ways beyond music. I will always be grateful to him for everything and could never thank him enough. I loved high school. I wish I had more time in my senior year, that was when I looked past the band room a little bit. I was Band Librarian and kept rather busy by it. I would have loved to have been in drama (turns out I can sing on-key--surprise!--and I love doing community theater musicals). I don't know how I'd be described, besides as a band geek. I guess I was a smart kid, most certainly I wasn't a jock--the only class I'd get Cs in was PE. I wasn't a stoner (well, high school anyway) but had many friends who were, not a singer but had many friends in chorus. I wasn't part of the "popular crowd" but had friends in almost every different "level" from popular to loners. If you have any other descriptions, please let me know. I look back at my yearbook and words like crazy, weird, funny, loud, wanting never to grow up, fun all pop up a lot. I graduated in 1975 and went to Florida State University, CLEP'ing out my first year and graduating in 1978. Again, I was a band geek in Marching Chiefs, and was in a great sorority, Delta Zeta, but was never a "sorority chick" (sorry, couldn't bother with all that makeup). At the...Expand for more
ripe old age of 32, I went to the University of Minnesota Law School and surprisingly graduated Magna Cum Laude, top 10%, Order of the Coif, in 1993. I'd still rather be playing with those kindergarten blocks ..... and don't ever plan to grow up! College I started at Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL in 1975 (back before they won football games--ages ago). I CLEP'd my first year, so I graduated in 1978. Started out in Medical Technology, but it didn't stick, and ended up in Mass Communications, PR and Advertising, but never did work in it. I wish I had majored in Theater, and if I were to go back today, I would. Probably the first thing people who knew me then would say (shh, NOT THAT) was that I was a very devoted member of the Marching Chiefs, the marching band. I loved musicians (probably too many) but didn't major in it, I saw what they went though. I was a little sister of Phi Mu Alpha, the music fraternity. I was a Delta Zeta -- but not really a sorority chick, couldn't bother with the make up and doing my hair all the time -- but I had a very, very fun time with my sisters. We weren't typically greek, which I take pride in. I was a Beta Theta Pi little sister (Daughter of the Dragon) and am sworn to secrecy about their initations (let's just say black sheets and candle wax did make an appearance......tee-hee). I adored college. I had so much fun. Actually, I had so much that I now look at my transcripts and there are whole classes that are a haze. Luckily (and I mean that, if you want details you have to ask personally) I got out of there with a diploma and my sorority pin intact. As a grown-up, I went to the University of MN law school in 1990, graduated in 1993. I've been in MN since 1980. I was a "nontraditional" (read - "old") student. I decided to go into law, in part due to the lawyer who handled my first divorce, figuring if he could get thru law school, I could get thru law school. I not only got thru, but graduated Magna Cum Laude, member of the Order of the Coif and in the top 10% of my class, much to my amazement. Those old brain cells did kick in finally. Even passed the bar exam. If I could get a degree in anything I wanted now? I'd get a theater degree with a minor in music (see guys, I always did love you), to do musical theater on stage. I would also like to get some vet tech or something, so I could care for the kitties I want to have in my cat sanctuary on a warm, tropical island. Oh, and women studies and spirituality, very important to me. That would help with my spiritual retreat attached to my cat sanctuary. I figure I need an island, that way no zoning can bother me (that's the problem with studying Land Use Law). I'd have some dogs too, Ridgies of course, and a couple Border Collies to herd my kitties when I'm not around to do it. That's the dream anyway. Anybody got any openings like that?? I actually have managed to herd cats, it's not all that hard really, but keeping them in those little kitty corrals just doesn't work. And they refuse to wear the tinny kitty saddles and bridles but my cat does walk on a leash. I don't "lead" him, more follow but it keeps him safe from the coyotes and foxes around here. Hopefully you've picked up on the fact that, despite my life having gotten more somber and serious that I planned, I haven't - for better or worse lost my sense of humor (or cynicism). Anybody need an island-sitter?? Workplace After FSU, I lived in Mississippi (with parents) and worked at hotels there. I then transferred up to Minneapolis, MN to work at properties owned by the same company in various managerial positions, ending up as catering manager. I then worked for travel agencies as administrative assistant and assistant manager. Then I decided to go into law and worked as a legal assistant/paralegal for 2 years to observe the field. I went to law school at the U of MN law school and practiced in insurance defense for 3 years. I then went to work for West Publishing as an Attorney Editor, reading to-be-published judicial cases and writing research headnotes on the legal points. Currently, I am not working due to medical problems, but hope to get back into an area where I can use my legal and analytical ability, with some creativity added, to improve the world. Yes, cliche, but after much reflection, what I truly want to do. Oh, and in someplace warmer than Minnesota!! I ended up living in MN for 26 years and 14 years in WI. Dream Job? Having a cat sanctuary on an island (or at least on a nice beach) and a spirituality center, and acting/singing/dancing in musicals on-stage. I love community theater, and, obviously, cats.
