Sandra's Story
Life
Grew up in El Paso. Worked for SBC for 30 years, retired in 2004. While my children were young, they played sports. When I worked for the phone company, I worked with numerous volunteer groups and became the ultimate community service activist. When I retired, I couldn't see myself just sitting around, so I looked for something to do. Found it by watching HBO REALSports one day. They featured a baseball league for children with disabilities. Check it out, here as big as El Paso is, there are no recreational opportunities for children with disabilities. Now my children and grandchildren are able bodied, thank the Lord, but there are 18,000 kids...Expand for more
in our community without anything to do because they either don't qualify for them or they come and go with funding. Anyway, I started the Miracle League here in El Paso in 2005. I am very proud of the league, we have leased a field from the City and are in the process of building a specially designed field for the kids. We started in 2005 with 6 teams and 60 kids, we now have 12 teams and almost 300 players. We never turn away a player, they range in age from 3 years old on up. You have to see the look in their eye when they hit that baseball or make it to home plate. Amazing..... so that is my life now. I am sure Barbara Prewitt would be so proud.
