Sandra's Story

During high school I found my hangout place to be the front lawn, where all the "dissidents and hippies" sat under the Kamani tree. I found a love for Spanish in Mr. Izawa's class and Music in Mr. Wilcox's Music Theory class. I never went to any dances, sporting events, or proms but I did participate in the all-student-produced, musical theatre productions, "Oliver!" (1969) & "Sweet Charity" (1970). I protested the Vietnam war, was part of a quartet that won the sr. talent show, playing a theme & variations on the Beatles' "And I Love Her". I played the Japanese koto. The summer of '71 I went on a 6-wk homestay, organized by Mr. Izawa, to Guadalajara, Mexico. Immersion is the best way to learn a language. I majored in Ethnomusicology (like a musical version of cultural anthropology) at UH Manoa and studied Japanese, Spanish and Portuguese. I marched in commencement for my BA in spring '75 but had to retake Math 100 during the summer. During jr. yr. I was awakened to the lilting sounds of Brazilian Bossa Nova on a morning jazz radio show on KTUH-FM, "college radio" and that started me on a quest to learn about Brazilian music. I took the two semesters of Brazilian Portuguese language that UH had to offer during my sr. year there. The two courses that changed the way I looked at Hawaii were Hawaiian Geology and Hula Kahiko (3 years w/Ho'oulu Richards Cambra, student of Auntie Maiki Aiu) My first music gig was with ukulele virtuoso, Ohta-San, soon after graduation in '75. He had just come back from Brazil & formed a band. Classmate, Luis "Ching" Gonzalez was also in the band. I worked for 4 years as a Spanish-speaking Visitor Information staff at Honolulu Int'l Airport where I also picked up tour escorting for Spanish & Portuguese-speaking groups. During that time I was trying to get to Brazil to study. In 1979, I sang backup & played percussion for Nohelani Cypriano. Finally my dream came true and Rotary International awarded me a fellowship to go study music in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I lived in Rio for 3 years. I married a famous percussionist and samba dancer, had 1 son, Ted, there & in '83, moved all of us back to the family house in Manoa to help care for Grandma. Jordan was born in '85 and Gina in '88. I am fortunate to be living in the same house I grew up in above the Chinese cemetery. Tour escorting, playing music and the field of interpretation/translation in English, Spanish & Portuguese kept our heads above water. I went back to RHS to assist Mr. Izawa in the classroom in '90. Part-time teaching popped up & became my bread & butter. I occasionally put together a small band for parties, singing jazz, brazilian & latin tunes. Divorce changed a lot of things in '93. I taught Music at Stevenson, then Kalakaua, got bumped so went into Special Ed & transferred to our alma mater in '02. It was nice giving back to the school where I started the language & music study. I spent 9 years teaching Learning Disabled & Severely disabled/Medically fragile students, 4 years teaching Spanish I & II, directed a Mexican-style mariachi band, advised the National Spanish Honor Society, a LGBT club & a knit & crochet club. I also taught Brazilian Portuguese at Farrington Adult ed classes for 5 yrs. Most students were either married to Brazilians, local Portuguese descendants, planned to travel to Brazil or practiced Capoeira or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I am active in the Hawaii All-Breed Rabbit Club & travel almost annually to the American Rabbit Breeders Assn. conventions & shows. Also am a member of the Hawaii Interpreters Action Network. Had been helping w/organizing reunions for RHS '71 since the 90s gives me joy to see old friends reunited and the making of new connections. We like to include faculty also. At previous reunions we enjoyed the company of former teach...Expand for more
ers, Mrs. Minami, Mrs. Kawahara, Mrs. Iwaida, Mrs. Kawamura, Miss Kauka, Miss Uyeda, Mrs. Todd & Mrs. Nishiyama. My hobbies are raising animals, i.e.,purebred rabbits (Rex, Flemish Giant, New Zealand & Champagne d'Argent) & egg-layer hens. I sell the surplus eggs to pay for their feed. I enjoy dog training (currently have 2 Boxers. Chucky& Olivia. I train them in Obedience & Canine Agility. I stay in shape through yoga, daily dog walking, occasional salsa dancing. going to local theatre productions & giving talks on the Portuguese language influence on Pidgin. I would like to have more time for sewing, crochet & knitting, hiking, cooking (write the recipe column for Domestic Rabbits Magazine),growing more of my own food & of course, decluttering the house! That never happens because I've become Facebook addict. My kids are all out of the house now. Ted, born 4-19-82 lives in Honolulu, a musician & graphic artist. Jordan, born 9-2-85, lives in L.A. Gina, born 3-18-88 lives in Honolulu. I trust they will all get their higher education once they see that what they're getting paid now doesn't cut it. I don't nag them much. They are all extermely smart & learn on their own. My dad passed 2/13/19. He was RHS Class of '39 valedictorian & was an interpreter/translator for MIS during WWII. He was the first Japanese-American to graduate from Indiana Univ. & Yale Law School. After retiring from his law practice he worked hours of labor arbitrator. His hobbies were swimming, golf, working out & bonsai trees. He was the spokesperson for the 442nd & 100th Battalions, the Varsity Victory Volunteers and the MIS. Mom passed from a short bout w/ALS, 9-3-14, was part of the Bamboo Ridge Asian-American writers group & has published some short stories on her times in the WWII relocation camp in AZ. My brothers, Paul (RHS '73) works in the legal section for the civilian employees at Pearl Harbor.. He was previously an attorney in various settings & HR at HHS (State-run hospitals). He's been married since 3-97 to Edie Takahashi & has 2 daughters. Tim (RHS '77) plays tenor saxophone in the Royal Hawaiian Band and the Honolulu Jazz Quartet. He married a percussionist also in the RHB, YooJin Bae. Since 1997, I have been cohabitating w/Alvin Shiraishi, an all-around, very personable massage therapist, originally from Kona. He has been very good to my kids, parents & critters I can take him anywhere. You'd like him too. Summer of 2009 I had to renew my State of HI ID so returned to my maiden name. Retired from teaching in 7/15 & do a lot of Spanish interpreter (occasionally Portuguese) work in the community, mostly medical appointments as well as State & Federal Court cases. I do various kinds of music gigs about every 3-4 months at places like Atherton Performing Arts Studio at Hawaii Public Radio or Blue Note Waikiki I enjoy traveling and have been back to Brazil twice in the last two years as well as to Japan for the first time since I was a teenager. I hope to be able to take small groups of friends to Latin American countries since those places have so much to offer and the dollar is strong. I would like to dispel a lot of the bad press those countries get as well as share countless, wonderful experiences at our disposal. I am host of "Brazilian Experience" on Hawaii Public Radio's HPR-2 since 1999 & you can find it on the station's link or "Brazilian Experience on Hawaii Public Radio" on Facebook. I love world travel and wish I could afford it more but I am thankful I have a beautiful place to live in, a house w/no mortgage I inherited, retirement benefits from the State, good friends, family & an unusually interesting life! If you read this, would love to hear from you, not just read your name. Let me know what brought you to my site and what you're up to. Aloha, Sandy

Hey everybody! Tomorrow is Shrove Tuesday, if you’re Christian & Malassada Tuesday if you’re in Hawaii. Here is the best recipe I have ever found. Got it from Denise Jardine’s mother, Liz, from her friend, Clara.
  Have mad
Glad to have grateful cats. I told Onze yesterday that she has work to be done because the sack of chicken feed in the coop had a big rat hole chewed in it. Today she brought me this baby mouse. The orange leash is 1 inch w
Celia & husband, Pedro Knight, whom she met
as 2nd trumpeter for the group, Sonora Matanceña. She was their vocalist for 15 years.
