Sandra's Story
NOTE: Since I wrote the following, we have moved back to RI to be closer to family. Moved to Coventry in November.
Hi Everyone! I've been living in the Chicago suburbs since 1978, when my husband Ron was transferred here to open a new store. It took me 16 years; but I finally earned my Bachelors degree in Organizational Development in 1987 and another 5 to earn my Masters degree in Labor Relations in 1992. I'm currently a Director of Human Resources for a municipality in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. I've been with them for the last 22 years. Never thought I would be one place for so long. Throughout the years I was involved is a lot of our 2 children's activities as a parent volunteer. I was very involved with our area Girl Scout Coucil for a number of years, from troop leader to Board member. I'm currently the President of the Illinois Public Employer Labor Relations Association and served on the Training Committee for the National Public Employer Labor Relation Association's National Conference in San Antonio this past April (2009). It was both an honor and a humbling experience! I am also a member of the Board of Directors for DuPage Credit Union here in Illinois.
However, I am most proud of our two children: Sara (29) is married to Ryan and they now live in Ayer, MA. Both met in college at Ball State University in Muncie, IN. They are the proud parents of Lena Noelle, who turned 2 in July '09 and Maya Naomi, who was born August 15, 2009. Sara is a 6th grade teacher in the Acton-Boxborough School District and Ryan is currently working as Adjunct Faculty for UMass--Lowell, as well as for another community college in Massachusetts. He also works part-time at Nashoba Winery and does freelance graphics design work. Our son Douglas and h...Expand for more
is wife Katherine (we call her Tassa) live in Seattle, WA. They both met while attending a public residential high school for gifted students, the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. Doug was admitted as a sophomore after completing 8th grade; and I remember telling him that this would perhaps be the most important life-changing event for him than anything he would ever do. And I still believe this today. It is where he met his wife and made life-long friends with whom he went to college and now share his life with in Seattle. They are all still together. Doug is a software developer and Tassa works for Starbucks and enjoys writing in her spare time. (They both majored in Asian Studies and Japanese while in college and spent one summer and another entire year studying in Japan while in college.)
As for Ron and I, we are both pretty busy with our jobs; and we enjoy the opportunties we have to visit our children and granddaughters. My mom moved out to live with us in 1987 and passed away in August 2008 from complications due to Alzheimer's disease. My dad passed away in 1980, just 2 1/2 weeks after Sara was born. Ron's mom lives in an assisted living facility in East Greenwich, which is absolutely beautiful! It is practically a resort. His dad passed away in 1989. The rest of our family is all back in Rhode Island; so we often get together here with our neighbors and friends here in Illinois.
I signed onto Classmates because I thought it would be a nice way to get reacquainted with former classmates. For those of you who are wondering, I am much more worldly and much less naive than I was in high school! Mon dieu! Those of you who knew me then probably know what I'm talking about. Anyway, I hope you enjoy reading "my little story."
