Sandra's Story

Life I married Richard Partin, Miami Jackson class of '54. I met my handsome, 23 year old Lt. when he was at home on leave from the Army Corp of Engineers, it was a WEEK before I graduated. His parents lived next door but we had never met b/c he was working at MacDonald Douglas on the Nike Missile, in L.A. When he was a Sr. at Miami Jackson he won an essay contest sponsored by the Miami Herald re: the UN. Was awarded a 4 yr.scholarship to the University of Miami. Rick & I had some of the same teachers, Mrs. Beech, History, Mrs. Satterfield, Math, Mr. Magnus, Civics & the older lady who taught English & would walk around the class, snapping her girdle & clicking her false teeth. I can't remember her name but she really was a nice lady, she had helped Rick w/the English in his essay for the contest. If you remember her name, please tell me what it was. Anyhow, after meeting we had 2 dates & he went back to Ft. Belvoir,VA. We corresponded from the end of May '57 till he returned home to Miami the middle of August, engaged Sept. 9th & married on Dec. 5, 1957. It was definitely, wonderful... love at 1st sight! He was an Engineer with Eastern Airlines in Miami for 3 years. Three children; girl born 2/59, girl 8/60 & boy 7/61 (kind of close together, huh?) we moved to Atlanta, GA. as he had been hired by Lockheed/GA. After six yrs. he took a leave of absence & was a superintendent of a boys home in Mission, Tx which is in the Rio Grande Valley. We lived there for a yr. Really enjoyed the area & our work with the boys. Rick went back to Lockheed for about 6 more yrs. My dad retired & Rick bought his construction related business which he ran for about 20 yrs. & retired. Rick died 11/12/03 from lung cancer, he had battled it for about 3 yrs. (never smoked). Was in remission for 1 1/2 yrs. then it came back with a vengeance. We would have been married 47 years in another 3 weeks. We were still sweethearts & I miss him! 12/5/06 would have been 48th anniversary I noticed in checking the classmates bios, there are only 1.5% in our class that have become widows or widowers. Let me hear from those of you who have reached that time in your life. These past 5 1/2 yrs. have passed quickly, thanks in big part to our only son & our remaining daughter, 3 grandchildren & many friends. I am only sharing the above & the following info. b/c I thought perhaps someone needs to know they aren't alone out there. If it has happened in your life & you want to "chat" you can contact me. Our middle child, Kat...Expand for more
hy, was killed in a car crash on Easter morning; she was 32 yrs. old. She & her husband had a son & daughter who were 14 & 12 at the time of her death. He remarried about 2 yrs later to a nice widow lady w/ 2 girls ages 3 & 9 at the time. Brian, Kathy's, son was in a car wreck at age 17 & broke his neck, was quadraplegiche lived about 4 yrs. & died of complications. It hasn't all been easy but I wouldn't trade any of our lives together, have so many treasured memories! Speaking of treasured memories, best friends in HS were Shirley Negus,Betty Weist,Juanita Skipper,Ray Dingeman,Ray Hahn,Frank McLeod,Harry Gorgan,Shirley Sussman,Barbara Woolsey,Claudette Sutherland,Charlene Revels, Barry Bagwell, Marcia Hitt & John Lamonica to nname afew. Also, dated a neat guy, "Bucky" he was a year behind me. He liked race cars & was being raised by a single mom, don't think he had any siblings. Remember me, in a class together, dated etc, let me hear from you. Any chorus or ensemble members out there? Wasn't Miss Joan Owens a great music teacher & wonderful person? Remember the chorus trip? I woudn't be surprised if this isn't the longest bio in the "class". Oh well, someone had to do it!... I realize that I wrote more about my husband than of myself; sooo... I worked as a Dental Assistant in Miami Beach for Fred Crockett, D.D.S. And in Coral Gables, for his wife, Ellen, a Pediatric Dentist until, I had our 1st baby. Two more babies & 3 yrs, later we moved to Sandy Springs, GA. Our family Dentist here, needed an assistant & asked me join their staff, which I did. Worked for Rollin Jackson, Jr. D.D.S. until we moved to Texas for a year. He is still a dear friend & our Dentist. In more recent yrs. I was Administrative Assistant at several businesses. Enjoyed all my jobs & many friends over the years. Life's been good! LATEST NEWS: ..Youngest granddaughter, Marie,25,is expecting a baby girl the middle of March. She & her husband will celebrate 3rd Anniversary about 2 weeks later. ..Son & his wife celebrated Silver Anniversary! (25 yrs.!) ..Oldest granddaughter, Jennifer, 29, was married 10/17/09 in Savannah, GA. at the Historic & beautiful St.John's Catholic Church! Grandson, Stephen, age 20, graduated high school. Works in kitchen at Outback Steak House. Has various positions which he likes. He isn't certain what he wants to do/be. I wish a great week to all those who read this "novel". Take care & let me hear from some of you, heck, ALL of you!... Sandra "Sandy" Ash Partin (Class 1957)
